Introduction:
This was/is a DIY project. The kitchen was gutted to the studs and a new "L" shaped wall was added to make room for the double oven. The gutting took place on December 13, 2003 and the flooring was just installed in January of this year. It's been a long process, but sometimes you run into surprises. My surprise was in taking the yucky sheetrock off the dining room and finding the walls underneath were all rotted out. So, a side delay of ripping the DR off to the concrete slab and starting over completely.
Everything in the kitchen is new - except the DW (which was new 3 years ago). All of the plumbing was redone (the basement ceiling looked like a racetrack and made six or seven loops instead of a straight line), some gas was re-routed and the ductwork to the kitchen and DR areas was redone. Rough project cost was about $14K. You can save literally thousands by DIY'ing it if you have the time, patience and friends to help. In order to get all I wanted, I shopped eBay and Appliancesmart. Shopping frequently at scratch/dent places for appliances can really pay off. To this day no-one has noticed the scratch on the DO that saved me $2k on its price. The WD was bought as a surplus item for 75% retail. I had similar luck with all the other appliances as well.
Details:
- Cabinetry ~ Premier Cabinets in the "Worthington Style". They are hickory with walnut pegs in each corner. The finish is a stain called "Amber Spice"
- Hardware ~ Mission style knobs from the Belwith-Keeler collection ~ purchased on eBay for $1/piece
- Countertop ~ Nevamar laminate in "Green Matrix" with a no-drip edge and flat-deck (no added 4" backsplash)
- Sink ~ the 4-hole Kohler Staccato (eBay purchase)
- Faucet ~ Price Pfister "Marielle" in the ORB finish (again, an eBay find)
- Cook top ~ Jenn-air
- Fridge ~ KA Superba
- Double Oven ~ KA upper/lower convection
- Warming Drawer ~ KA Classic Series
- OTR MW ~ KA Microhood combo
- Flooring ~ Engineered hardwood in cherry ~ from Sun Paratech (this runs throughout LR and DR)
- Backsplash ~ Slate ~ natural slate from India ~ purchased from HD for $1/sq. ft ~ (also in entry way). The slate backsplash was both color-enhanced and sealed with a silicon impregnator. The color-enhancer is this one made by Stone Care International. The silicon impregnator is this one, made by HMK. Both were very easy to apply and there was really no smell/odor involved.
- Paint ~ the red/brick is "Flower Pot" by SW, the dark yellow/gold is "Honeycomb" from SW and the light yellow is "Harvester" from SW
- Outlet Covers ~ in slate to match the backsplash ~ made for me by a friend
- Outlet Covers for DR ~ a friend is making some very similar to these for me in copper - I just have to get the hammering done on them and they are ready to put up

I love your kitchen. I have come back to it several times for inspiration. Could I ask about the oven location? Do you find it inconvenient?
Love, love, love your kitchen and DR remodels!
