DIY Kitchen Finished!

Posted by socal_ann (My Page) on Sun, Sep 18, 05 at 22:39
Here is our finished DIY kitchen - DH completed all the work except the fabrication and installation of the countertops. The complete kitchen remodel took 21 months - we spent the first 6 months planning, designing, and purchasing. DH started the demolition phase last Sep and just completed the backsplash last weekend. He still needs to put up the crown moulding that will border both the kitchen & the breakfast room - which still needs to be remodeled now that the kitchen is done - actually we have the family room to re-do, too! and oh yes, there's the re-do of the master bathroom - we just discovered that the shower leaked into drywall & behind tiles without our knowledge but I guess that's another forum ;)
It has been a wonderful journey made more interesting by this forum and the applicance forum. My luck to have found this place .... first thanks to a great DIY DH - he's the keeper - and then another thank you to all of you here - old-timers & new-timers - thank you! There are so many wonderful people sharing knowledge, ideas, and experience - pretty awesome!

Oh my! What a wonderful job, and a DIY at that. Your kitchen is spectacular. You've both done a marvellous job, and should be grinning from ear to ear. I really do mean it. If only you all were my neighbours, lol
I love the pot filler, and the cabinets, the range the floor. It's just great. Where did you get your cabinets? The marble looked awesome with the cabinets and wall colour.

We are DIYing it, too, and I have to tell you, fabulous kitchen!!! That floor is gorgeous... what a good job your DH did... I saw the comment about no long parallel grout lines, good idea to do that design but I bet it gave him fits!
I love the marble 2-level island and I love your pendant lights, and the backsplash. What a beautiful space to work in. Congrats!

This is extraordinary. Did you compromise on anything? The level of detail (the flooring, the arches, the moldings, the electrical and lighting, the design of the island, etc., etc.) is spectacular; the choice of appliances smart and sure to deliver great price/performance. 6 months of planning well spent. The workflow for this kitchen is terrific. To have DIY’d it only makes the whole thing even more impressive. As someone who couldn’t DIY anything I’m completely in awe.

wow, that is beautiful! i love your verde butterfly granite and then the marble island! it looks so rich! i was wondering, where did you get that little wire basket to hang on your sink to keep the sink stopper in? or did it come with the sink? that is such a nice touch!

 o RE: DIY Kitchen Finished!

WOW WOW WOW! Gorgeous and to think it was all DIY! Your DH is very skilled. I love the marble counters. It's really a beautiful kitchen. Great job!

 o RE: DIY Kitchen Finished!

I can't believe that was a DIY! It's truly a showstopper. I love the calacatta - - both marble and backsplash - - and it looks great with the cabinets. Great job on design - - and you must be very proud of DH!

 o RE: DIY Kitchen Finished!

thanks everyone for the good words; I will post more this weekend in reply!

 o RE: DIY Kitchen Finished!

oops - a little bit late in responding but thank you for the good words. We are thoroughly enjoying the kitchen.
Mariposa - We purchased the cabinets from Buycabinets.com through their west coast office.
diykitchen - yes, I really did not want long parallel grout lines - hubby didn't complain but it take a few more design trys until there were no more long parallel grout lines .... and then a second trip to the tile place to get more tile .... 'cause no long parallel grout lines meant more sq ft of tile!
michoumonster - I found the little grid basket at Bed, Bath, and Beyond (one of my favorite stores ;)

Yowzer! Fantastic job. Your cabinets are so furniture like and it has a feel of not a kitchen but a den or library! You have got to be so happy!
P.S. We have the same sponge holder!

Let me take some new pictures as we've already made some changes! But, here
it was then. I am still thrilled with the counters and think each type works for the way we use those areas. The cherry was absolutely cheap when cost was compared. It was done by our cabinet guy who has since done 4" backsplashes in cherry to replace the white ones in these pictures. All the cupboards were made by a local guy. We have had no hinge or inset problems
and we do not have air conditioning! I had to include two dog pictures!"
