sage63's Kitchen

Really close to being finished!

Posted by sage63 (My Page) on Fri, Sep 30, 05 at 12:48

Here is the link to my kitchen. I just have to put hardware on the island and paint the
woodwork on the windows and doors and make curtain valances for over the
windows.

ALL of the wood trim in my house is peeling and is now being stripped down to the
base color (by ME!! - a SLOW process!) and then sanded and repainted in Ralph
Lauren's Oatmeal color. You will see many shades & colors of wood trim ....ignore that
please! :-) Imagine it all matches the crown molding which is done and the correct
color.

The cabinets were custom built in maple and stained on site (a multiple step staining
process).
The granite is lapidus.
The farm sink is copper from e-bay.
The faucet it Cucina Brigida in San Marco Bronze finish.
The backsplash is Westminister Tile tumbled marble in antique gold in the harlequin pattern (NOT jerusalem stone harlequin from Westminister Tile.)

I threw in a few pics of my livng room in progress also. The woodwork in the sunroom (in the background) is supposed to be black. That part is done. (yeah!!)

Thanks for viewing!

Let me be the first to say...WOW! What a kitchen! AND WOW! What a house!!!

It looks so warm and inviting! Can I come on over?

My backsplash tile looks so much like yours, but I think mine is by a different manufacturer.

Beautiful! Enjoy! Amanda

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Beautiful, just beautiful! Yeah, I'm so glad to see someone who's not afraid to show PERSONALITY. It's very refreshing - I see so many pics that have all the "right" things but leave me cold. Your pictures are all inviting, warm and creative. Bravo! Well done.

o RE: Really close to being finished!

LOve the kitchen...so warm and inviting! What is the color you used throughout the kitchen/FR? It comes across as a soft melon with gold undertones. Thanks!

o RE: Really close to being finished!

It is a muted gold called "Cork" by Benjamin Moore. I used their Ceramic Matte paint and really liked it a lot. I used the color throughout my whole house except for the Master Bedroom suite (b.r./bath/closet-study) which is a chocolate brown color by RL called "Coconut" that I had mixed to match in the BM Ceramic Matte and my kids rooms which are "kid colors" - DD's is bright apple green and DS's is Orange. (That'll wake 'em up in the mornings!) Otherwise it is Cork. I love the unifying way it goes all through my house - it makes everything seem to flow together so much more than when I had a color for the hall, a color for the L.R., a color for the D.R., etc.

o Really beautiful kitchen...it fits so well in your home...

and is so warm, inviting & timeless. Enjoy.
Trish

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Wow, talk about a house right out of an episode of "This Old House"!! You truely have my respect for taking on such a project. Your hard work and vision really paid off. The kitchen is just breathtaking and fits in perfectly with the whole theme. It looks like a home/kitchen out of Provence!

Merveilleux !

o RE: Really Close to being finished!

I was so excited I forgot my last sentence ...

I was going to say that your home looks as if it could be in one of my favorite catalogs ... Pierre Deux

Check them out at Pierre Deux Exclusive.

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Sage...

You have no idea how long I have waited with great anticipation for you to post these finished pictures.

Your "during" photos inspired me to get a copper farm sink. Let me say that your kitchen has turned out to be even far more fabulous that I imagined it would.

By far - one of my favorites!!!

Exquisite taste in decor throughout the whole house ...did you consult someone? Or are you just "that good!" :-)

Bravo .....Beautiful!

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Thank you again, Everyone! Such kind words! My mother, sister and sis-in-law all help me decorate. We all have similar tastes and decor. My sister is the best at furniture placement. I like to "tablescape" (like all the stuff on top of my cabinets and counters and etc.). All of the other decisions were basically decided (with much agony and sleepless nights) by me and bouncing ideas off of my DH by doing many many hours of research here at THS Kitchens & Appliances sites and sitting in Books A Million reading all of the decorator magazines to see what I liked.

I used to antique a lot before everything got so expensive. Now I do a lot of shopping at TJ Maxx and Tuesday Morning!! :-D It is amazing what you can find at those places for so much less!

Thanks again everyone, I couldn't have made it through without you all helping me every baby step of the way!! Your advice and posts were invaluable.

 o Correction!

It wasn't jerusalem stone we used on the backsplash but Westminister Tile tumbled marble in antique gold in the harlequin pattern. It really livened up with the sealer the tile guy put on. Much more depth and richer color but NOT NOT NOT shiny. I was specific that I didn't want it to shine.

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Thanks for the inspiration. We're just beginning the process of figuring out what we want to do in our kitchen, and this site is such a help! I've been giving my DH a blow by blow of all the interesting things I've found, and he is fascinated too. Your kitchen is a wonderful inspiration. It is GORGEOUS. You should be so proud! Your copper sink in particular caught my eye, as we have a huge collection of copper pots and pans and I'm trying to get inspiration on what color scheme would look best with them... Yours was perfect! Thank you for all the ideas! LOVE your entire house! Thank you so much for including all the non-kitchen photos too, so one gets an idea of the total look... I think my DH would trade your house for ours in a minute! How do you feel about moving to Seattle?? :-)

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Shoot! We'd LOVE Seattle. We're coffee freaks anyway and I love rainy days! :-) Thanks for the kind words. I love my copper sink and got it from e-bay. The guage is nice and heavy - I've been really pleased with it's performance. It has a small spot by the drain that pools a little but I've heard that the handmade fireclay sinks by Herbeau can do this also and I paid a LOT (LOT) less for mine. It is not a big deal to me as the trade off worth it. I love the look! :-)

Thanks again!

Okay, Which magazine did you get these pictures out of!Absolutely beautiful!

o RE: Really close to being finished!

I absolutely love your cabinets. What is the glaze and the technique? You said *multiple* layers, I believe? I'm cabinet searching right now and yours are the most beautiful I've seen.

o RE: Really close to being finished!

Thanks again, ya'll. Erin - I really wish I could be more specific on my cabinet color. We had a painter (that was really more of an artist) come in and $tain them on $ite. :-) They were maple cabinets and we showed him an antique pine armoire we had and told him that that was the color we wanted to achieve with our kitchen cabinets. It was so totally trial and error till we got there. I think I bit all my fingernails off!! He kept telling me I had to trust him that the next step he did would bring out the color I was wanting. The first yellow stain was SO yellow. Then he airbrushed an amber stain onto that. He "highlighted" the cabinets with the airbrushing technique and pulled out any imperfections we could find (we wanted those to show and we had distressed them lightly before the staining process began!) Then when he had the amber stain perfect and a clear coat of varnish over that I made him go over that with a black artist's paint and wipe "grunge" in the cracks, grooves and dings. He was afraid to do it but it really brought it to life and he was pleased with the final result. (So was I!!) It is an 80-something year old home and I didn not want NEW looking cabinets in there. It had to stay with the character of the home and hopefully feel like they belonged there.

Hope that helps explain it better. I have no actual stain color names to give.

What an amazing kitchen- and I am not usually as fan of white(ish)
cabinets. I absolutely love it especially the cabinets, pantry door
(oooh) and the panel on the fridge. I have to go back and look at the

Very
beautifully done, julie, and the rest of the house is gorgeous, too!
The kitchen really is just wonderful! I love the fridge....and
everything.

Some questions...is that wallpaper or a paint/stencil technique on your dining room walls? What's the LR paint color?

Julie,

Your
kitchen looks like a magazine! I love it. I like how you used two
different granites to bring out the island. The pantry is wonderful.

I
had the same question on the paint. I like how you flanked the
fireplace with the TV. What size TV is that? How far out does the
built-in come out from the wall? I'm asking for a lot - could you post
a pic of the fp sometime?

Thanks for posting. It looks beautiful!

MaryJo

 o RE: Pinkerton's Kitchen...

Absolutely
beautiful, Julie! We were thinking of doing a similar color scheme and
have been culling designer photos for reference. Yours certainly beats
alot of the "model" kitchens we've seen.

Julie,

I
have a few more questions. Where did you purchase your pendant lights?
How many inches did you place them from the granite top on the island?

Thanks again!

I
echo all sentiments above! I was so happy to see your kitchen because I
have similar cabinets and countertops. We are going to be getting a new
cooktop in our island(Thermador also)and are considering using a darker
granite for the island (Tropic Brown). I've been nervous but seeing
your kitchen puts me at ease! Thanks for posting.

Thanks
to everyone for all your nice comments. I enjoy assisting whenever I
can because I know there are sooooo many decisions to make. LOL to
everyone. Julie

Kristen
The Dining Room is a stencil technique
with glaze. I did it myself and is very easy. The Living Room paint is
Sherwin Williams Raffia Basket #1113. I used this in the guest room and
love it. It is probably my favorite color next to the dining room.

MaryJo
Our
TV is 27", which is small by todays standards, but is plenty big. Even
my husband (big sports fan) was amazed at how easy it is to see from
anywhere in the room. But I couldn't want to try to watch it from the
kitchen, so I put one there as well. Works great. The cabinets flanking
the fireplace are out 24" from the wall and the ones next to them are
out 16". I have ALL the dimensions. I actually designed this myself.
(Dad's a cabinet maker so it's in my blood I suppose). But we had lots
of constraints so it had to be just so. And yes, I plan to take and
post a picture of the entire wall as soon as all the holiday stuff is
put away. Might check back in a couple of days.

Oh, the pendant lights are 31.5 inches from bulb to counter and the edge of them are back from the counter edge 12".

We
bought them from the local lighting showroom and this is all I could
find about them. Vendor#146 and item#1811 PM/2007. Hope this helps. JP

hole in the island with a trashcan underneath. I thought of doing that
on my wall counter but chickened out.

Thank you!

Beautiful! Especially like how the fridge is so seamless. I assume it is a counter-depth.?

Did you use the Amana supplied trim kit or how did you attach the panel with the nice pulls.

Thanks

 o RE: Pinkerton's Kitchen...

  • Posted by: jjcpink01 (My Page) on Sat, Jan 4, 03 at 7:29
Hi everyone!

Yes,
Weed30, that is a hole in the granite for the trash. Almost chickenout
as well, but glad I didnt. I use it constantly. We had a cover made for
it but it only goes on when company comes.

MJ
The paint
color in the family room and kitchen is Sherwin Williams Croissant
#1114. The numbers are all different at SW now, but with the number,
they can still mix it for you.

Alexmisc
The Amana is their
counter depth model BB20V1S. The cabinet maker made the door with the
chalkboard panel insert. But it wasnt without problems... the full
length Amana handle, which is part of the trim kit, had to be removed
at a metal fabricator shop. Once the panel was in and the handle/end
piece on, there was almost no room to put your hand behind the handle.
Make sense? So in removing the Amana handles, we just ordered a couple
more Top Knob pulls. In the end, it looks much better this way. The
Amana specs simply didnt state that there configuration would really
only work with a flat panel. Let me know if you'd like me to send you a
close up photo of what I'm talking about. JP

Thanks
Julie. Your fridge looked like the Amana counter depth but was confused
by the trim kit cause I've never seen anything like it in the stores.
Now it makes sense.

Did you ever consider or try Frigo Desigs? they
apparently make trim kits for overlays now (I doubt so since you
wouldn't need to since you order the counter depth)

alex

 o RE: Pinkerton's Kitchen...

I
love the lightness of your kitchen. I have a question about the
integrated F&P dishdrawers. When I tried them in a store, I thought
they were a little hard to manage with knobs, kind of unbalanced even
though empty. So I've been planning to put handles on them. But it
might have been because they were not really installed. Do you find the
knobs convenient? They are certainly prettier than handles.

 o RE: Pinkerton's Kitchen...

Julie
WOW!!!
I am so impressed. I love your sense of style & design. I see so
many great details, I could compliment you all day.. but I LOVE that
fridge! : )

I just posted questions about a chalkboard fridge on
the appliance forum & someone was kind enough to point me to your
pics! This is EXACTLY what I had pictured in my mind! I am just
thrilled to see someone else also thought this a great idea & it's
super to actually get to "see" it & have something to show the
cabinet man. Thanks so much for posting the pics.

I echo the
question posted by alexmisc: did you consider Frigo panels?
(www.frigodesigns.com --search for chalkboard) I stumbled upon them,
but know nothing about them at all. They have a great chalkboard kit,
but I am exploring whether I could put the wood trim around it, as you
have. It looks much prettier. The handle problem you had turned out
great--looks "intended"!

I would be very interested in the
other pics of the refrigerator that you mentioned. I'm certain my
cabinet guy will think I've gone over the edge & providing some
visuals would be great.

Thanks

thanks

 o RE: Pinkerton's Kitchen...

  • Posted by: jjcpink01 (My Page) on Fri, Jan 17, 03 at 17:03
Cloudy Christine,

I've
gotten use to the dish drawers with the knobs but they were suppose to
have handles. But I wasn't there to oversee the installation of the
knobs and the cabinet guys drilled holes on center without looking at
their instructions!!! Typical. So, we returned the handles and got
knobs.

Sep2897, I never really considered Frigo because the
Amana was the model that accepted custom made panels. Frigo is
supposedly a good solution if you already have a refrigerator or are
getting one that doesn't offer a trim kit.

Hope this helps. JP

Julie,
I know you already addressed the DD knob situation. I am putting knobs
on mine, but I was thinking of mounting them higher. Are the drawers
easy to open with them in the middle? That would match my other drawers
better, I just thought it might be hard to open being that far down
from the top. What are your impressions?

I LOVE your kitchen -- It is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!!

Kathy,

Hum,
I'm so use to the drawer knobs that I don't even notice their
placement. I like them in the middle but they could also go higher and
work very well. I must say that the bottom one is quite a reach, but I
really don't think anything about it. Not sure if this helps. But I
don't think you can go wrong either way. Best of luck. Julie

Just
love your kitchen and home. It is beautiful!!! It is elegant yet still
gives you a warm homey feeling. I must say the domestic office should

I
am thinking of getting the same style vent hood that you have. Are you
happy with the way it looks in your kitchen? I am usually very
traditional - and my other choice is a custom hood which matches my
white cabinets. But I think I may go with this instead - it just seems
to add a lot of style to the kitchen. What size is your hood? Is it 36"
or 48"?? It's hard to tell in the picture. Mine would be 36" -over an
electric cooktop.

Glitterbug,
I selected the tiles at a local tile supply place that only sells
through designers. I'm not sure if that is the only way to get them or
not. But check out the manufacturers website at sonomatilemakers.com.
They really do have some gorgeous tiles. Good luck. Julie

Thank
you Terra! Just two words of caution if you do in fact choose the
Chocolate Brown granite... 1) Because it contains large pieces of
quartz, it does not accept an ogee (sp?) edge very well. I'm not sure
if you can see it in the pictures or not, but it is very bumpy. And 2)
buy plenty of Miracle Cloths or plain white Scott's paper towels. These
are the only two things that I've found to leave it streak-free.

Other than that, we love it and would choose it again. Best of luck! Julie

lights came from a local fixture store and they are model #1811PM/2007.
The vendor is Kalco and they cost $81 each. I too looked and looked
until I found these and they worked perfectly. Hope this helps. Julie

Julie -

Love
your kitchen. Especially the arch and the way you repeated it in the
island. What are the dimensions of your kitchen? I didn't see any on
your floor plan.

Did your dad make the cabinets? Gorgeous!

 o RE: Pinkerton's Kitchen...

  • Posted by: jjcpink01 (My Page) on Thu, Nov 20, 03 at 7:25
Patrice607,
the dimensions are roughly 19 x 12 not counting the nook. If you look
closely at the floorplan you'll see the little squares - each one is
one foot.

As for the cabinets, they were made by a local cabinet maker. My dad was too far away or I would have had him do them.

Good luck! Julie

Julie,
I
noticed that you have a Grohe faucet and it is installed with the
handle facing you. Do you like it that way? Was it installed that way
because there wasn't room to turn it the other way? I see on the Grohe
website that there must be 3 1/2 inches between the wall and the faucet
in order for the handle to work properly. If there's not enough room,
they suggest turning the faucet 90 degrees to the position that yours
is in. I am getting a D shaped double sink - either Blanco or Elkay.
I'm just not sure if there will be enough clearance for the faucet to
be installed the preferred way.
Thanks, Beth

Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Posted by twochicklets (My Page) on Wed, Feb 16, 05 at 22:38

After
alot of searching I found Julie again! This is one beautiful kitchen.
She is no longer a member here so I am posting for her as a lot of us
needed to see it again. Pay close attention to the garbage can (or it
may be compost) cut out in the granite, the blackboard on the fridge,
the etched pantry door, etc. etc. It is so classy and truly an
inspiration kitchen! I am sorry to say that I won't be able to answer
your questions about it, but I do know that the backsplash tile is from
Sonoma Tile Makers. Enjoy!

This always was one of my favorites.
Thanks for posting!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

So pretty. I've never seen it before. I love the cabs...very similiar to what we picked. Ours MAY be going in next week....:)

Thanks for sharing.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Ahhhh, one of my all time favorites :)

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I
remember it now; beautiful. I just noticed the designated area under
the sink for the kitchen towel, now that's attention to detail !!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I am a long time lurker, but have never seen Julie's kitchen pictures. What a beauty!!! Love it!
Thank you for posting again.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Love your kitchen!
Tigerlily

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I think this is a keeper.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Yeee-um! That is absolutely exquisite. What is the granite on the permiter cabinets?

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

The perimeter granite is Santa Cecelia!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I'm
drooling here! Do you think it's real wood or laminate on her floors?
Which wood do you think it is? Thanks! This kitchen is gorgeous!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I am positive Julie has actual wood on the floors.

Her kitchen was one of my top inspirations!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

A dream!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Yes I loved this one too; good to see it again! I love the color of the cabinets.
Like a white with a rubbed stain over. It is a very inviting
homey kitchen. sheshe

 o Thanks!

The closest I'm getting is laminate but it'll do! :)

Do
you know which materials (paint and glaze) were used on her cabinets?
I'm going to try and replicate the look. It's simply gorgeous!

Whatever happened to Julie?

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

bump!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Julie
used BM linen white oil on the cabinets, then distressed ...then
applied Zar antiquing glaze in walnut which is no longer made! :(

On
my test piece - the Zar glaze has a peachy tone to it. Julie was kind
enough to mail me 2 small cans. Since it is no longer made - I was
afraid that 2 small cans would not be enough, I used Valspar Walnut
stain and could not be happier with the results!

 o Thanks Decor_Diva!

I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :):):):) LOL!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Bump

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I hope Julie Pinkerton is happy, but to me, it looks like the 'before' pictures.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Oruboris,
You may be confused. The before pics on this album are from MY previous
house, not Julie's. I have added her photos to my album because she no
longer posts here. My album has the before/after pics from my old house
as well as Julie's. There are only a few photos of Julie's and I don't
think they look anything like mine, (I could only wish.)

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

It's
a nice kitchen, to be sure, but far from stellar; I've seen MUCH more
beautiful kitchens on this forum. What is the fuss all about?

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

It's in the eye of the beholder, for sure. ;)

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

This
kitchen is one of the reasons I love this forum. Here is a kitchen that
is very much not my style but ... I love it! Truly I do! Why? To echo
other thoughts, it's all in the details. The angled glass pantry door,
the compost/garbage thingy, the tuckaway towel bar, the tv making use
of an up-there spot, the brighty yet cozy feel. This kitchen does what
a kitchen should, with style, and with rapt attention to the cook who
designed it. Cheers to Julie!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I love this kitchen! Are there any other pictures of Julie's house? I'd love to see what she has done throughout her home!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

I was poking around in the archives and found Julie's original gallery thread. I posted it in the finished kitchens blog. It's interesting reading if you're interested in the details of her kitchen!

Her member name was jjcpink01.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pinkerton's Kitchen & (House)

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

starpooh, I can only see kitchen pics, no other rooms in Julie's home. Am I missing something? Thanks
catkin

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

hi catkin - yeah, the way I posted her kitchen is confusing. I try to copy exactly what members write, so the title of the post is "Pinkerton's Kitchen & (House)" since that's how Julie posted it.
But the link that Julie originally gave for her thread is no longer active. Decor_Diva volunteered to host Julie's kitchen in her own gallery.
I'll change the name of the thread to remove the confusion...

Thanks for catching this!

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Dang it! I was hoping to see her home! LOL! Is it nowhere? Doesn't Julie ever come back here? :)

I'm so thrilled o see her kitchen, though! Thanks.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Wow, what a beauty. I absolutely love this kitchen. The pantry door is such a great touch. The cream cabinets, flooring and countertops look perfect with each other. Julie has remarkable taste. Thanks for posting it for us.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Thanks for posting this picture. Julie's Kitchen is beautiful. Does anybody know the name of the hardware Julie used for her cabinets? I read that it was manufactured by top knobs but I don't know the name of the collection. I would be perfect. I hope someone can help. Thanks

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Hi Bari,

I used Top Knobs and love them. Julie

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Hi Julie!! Yeah, you're back. Is there any chance you would post the rest of your photos? I only had a few and you can see that they are still very much in demand. The funniest comment I saw though was the one about how your chalkboard refrigerator must look now. In any event, glad you checked back in.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Hi! Yes, I decided to join in again. I've been amazed at the number of members who have continued to reference my kitchen so I decided to help out when possible. The only problem is that I do not have a site to post pictures to yet. Will try to within a couple of weeks.

It has been fun to read the comments, mostly all good. And the not so good ones are a hoot. As for my refrig, the pictures that are out there now are only about four months old. (Lost all of the original pictures). So, my refrig panel looks just like it did the day it was installed.

Again, thanks for referencing my kitchen when appropriate and hopefully I'll be able to help more now too.

Chat later! Julie

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Julie, your kitchen is divine. Absolutely stunning, timeless, elegant. I recall seeing your kitchen on another site (Painted cabinet, perhaps??), and I fell in love with it. It is an inspiration for those trying to achieve that sophisticated look!

On another note, I can't believe there are grown "adults" on this board that cannot follow the old adage, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all". I mean, really, why would someone feel compelled to put their $.02 in and try to cut someone down? Ummmm, I believe it is called bitterness. Sorry.

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Julie,

Glad to see you are back. Your kitchen is very lovely. May I ask who is the manufacturer of your beverage cooler?

 o RE: Julie Pinkerton's Kitchen

Hello, Julie and thank you. We'd love to see the rest of your home. Your kitchen has been my inspiration! :)

I see so many posts referencing Julie Pinkerton's kitchen, and I've seen the photos -- It's one drop-dead beautiful kitchen. But is Julie Pinkerton a 'real life' celebrity? Or just a 'regular person' who who pulled off a gorgeous kitchen and has become a Kitchen Forum legend?

Reno,
I have to beg to differ in opinion. She might have been a regular person last week, but as of yesterday, Julie Pinkerton is a real life celebrity! I called DecoDiva, yesterday, to talk about cabinets. While talking, Kim asked me if I had seen Julie Pinkerton's kitchen? I had, but could only place 'frame shots' in my mind. I came home and looked up her kitchen. Yes, I had Julie's kitchen in my inspiration photos saved, but as another name. I love her cabinet color!

I think it's fair to say that once people start talking about you like this, you're either known as a celebrity or a PITA. =0)

LOL!!!!... I have seen her kitchen.... but I guess I am at a loss.. did she grow the wood herself... hewn by her own hand? tumble the limestone in her washer? I guess I am saying that I think it's quite nice but it seems pretty much what most high end kitchens in my area have to one degree or another and while nice... uhhhh it does not light me on fire. But then again I think that is one of the best parts about kitchen design.. there is room for all of us and we all can do beautiful kitchens in many differnt ways!

Maddie,

I agree! Nice kitchen looks straight out of a magazine. Which I guess is why it doesn't light me on fire either. It's too generic I don't see anything personal or unique. A showcase but lacking personality perhaps. One of my favorites is Pammo's kitchen (in gallery finished kitchen 2). Hers is unique and oozes personality.

o RE: The legendary Julie Pinkerton

  • Posted by: FlyLeft (My Page) on Thu, Jun 30, 05 at 23:37
hollybolly, I agree with you completely about Pammo's kitchen. I LOVE that kitchen, even though it wouldn't be a style that I would choose for my own.

Bosche's is the other one that just floors me. THAT I would choose for my house, if I had a house three times the size of the one we have!

Oh yeah, Bosche's kitchen is a dream! And Pammo's does have such a personality. And while we're talking wonderful, Janedibber's kitchen makes me want her house. And let's not forget Gardin_of_Darwin's gorgeous soapstone tiles, backsplooziesplat and great sink area, Vasheri's killer granite, Reno_fan's great checkerboard backsplash, HollyBolly'scharacter pottery and DIY sink, and Maddiemom's incredible cottage charm. Sweeby,

Thanks for including me in that list. Those are all beautiful and unique kitchens. I especially love Bosche's. Given the resources it's pretty easy to recreate a "designer" kitchen. It's much more work and fun to make a staement that reflects you and your family. All of those that you mentioned did just that IMO.

o RE: The legendary Julie Pinkerton

Oy. Thanks for the compliment, but I hardly think my humble little "kitchenette" qualifies for a Hall of Fame. I do like the idea, though.

Nominations and seconds? Then posting of pictures? I can create a TKO Hall of Fame page secondary to the IKEA Fan Site. It would be a static gallery with no drop-offs. Anyone game?

Do they have to be "finished" kitchens? If not, I nominate Sweeby. Anyone want to second? (Gotta get pics somehow, Sweebs!)

If anyone wants to participate, I'll start a new thread, and I can work on the webpage tonight. :)

Susan

o RE: The legendary Julie Pinkerton

personally I like the idea of having all the kitchens listed.... who is to judge which are Hall of Famers or not?
The Finished Kitchens Blog contains many of these kitchens. Members names are now alphabetized. The entire thread is copied which usually includes the details of the kitchen. I try to add to it when a kitchen is due to roll off the gallery. The format isn't the greatest.. I'm trying to find time to make it more user-friendly. But I'd love to have help if anyone is interested!

Thanks Starpooh! What a resource! I'd never seen it before--shows you what I know... I wasn't suggesting that there be any judge, just a nomination and a second. But since you've already got them listed, I don't see any need. I had no clue!

Aw shucks. Twas nothin'.
I started it a few weeks ago after a thread was posted about how finished kitchens in the gallery scrolled off too quickly (mostly because some folks "accidentally" post discussion threads in the gallery forum). I hoped that folks would help post their kitchens in the blog, but nobody volunteered. So I continued it basically for my own retrieval of kitchen photos. Besides, I'm an obsessive compulsive consolidator (sp?).

I just added links to hollybolly's and reno_fan's kitchen. I've listed some of the kitchens you mentioned, but am missing a few.
Does anybody have links to these kitchens?
~ vasheri

Sweeby, my kitchen is about 90% complete. I'm still trying to carve out time to finish the Moby Dick of Backsplashes...there's something about doing tiny glass mosaic work and motherhood of an only child that just don't mix. When I have finished, and when my DH finally finishes putting up the molding/light rails/fillers that we've also abandoned for various activities out in the real world, I will finally post my kitchen. I promise.

We're still in an 'unphotogenic' stage, but making progress. Two more pieces of soapstone in, and with luck, our red island gets assembled tomorrow (cross your fingers for me)! We did, if I say so myself, manage to match the factory finish pretty darn well... We've got our old beige Corian countertops up on our new cabinets, so it actually functions (sorta - no water, no stove), but doesn't look much like it will...

But I promise - full photo spread to come.

Does anyone have a link to Maddiemom's kitchen? I am interested in seeing it, as I like the cottage look.

Also, starpooh...maybe the blog could also be organized by style of kitchen...or materials used? Alphabetically works really well if you know the kitchen you're looking for, but as a newbie I wouldn't know Julie Pinkerton from any other member! :) Is there a way to do both?

One of my favorites that I didn't see on there was NorCalNancy's kitchen. Not sure if she ever posted final pics, but I love her flamed, honed granite.

Oh, and back on topic.....to me, Julie's kitchen is perfect because:

-it's warm/homey without being overdone
-it's has newer trendy items, but manages to have a timeless feel
-it looks like it could be in an historical home, or also a brand new home
-(totally personal) her choices are all my favorites!

I agree, if there were some sort of index such as that of style, or color of cabinets, or countertops, etc. It would make it a lot easier (and more useful) for many people. I know that's a lot of additional work, but breaking it down into a couple of criteria could be doable. (I think a special section for "budget" kitchens would be very nice.)

I know that's a lot of work, and it's akin to looking a gift horse in the mouth as you've done such a good job already, but think about it.

MjsMama,

I wish I had a finished kitchen to show you!.. alas we are still collecting all the items for the kitchen.. since this is a DIY-cash deal I have been spending about a year buying stuff as I find it ( yes things are getting crowded!) Things are going well and I even spent a few hours this weekend doing scale sketches of the layout and the front on views. My big score was three vintage windows that are going to go above the built in hutch area. The hutched area comes up to about 6 feet and will effectivly block the view of my neighboors back yard..but I really wanted to have some light and the trees... the three windows will now shed in the light and give me a view of the tree tops and NOT of me neighboors sitting on their back porch having a smoke and a beer!

Starpooh--

Once again, good going! I just re-read above and realized that I'd skipped right over your question...I'd be glad to help (if I can) with the site. I don't know how much time I can devote to it, but I could put something simple together. E-mail me.

And regarding our kitchen--it's yet to come! The pictures that folks have seen are of our breakfast room which is an addendum of sorts to the main kitchen. One of these days we'll get around to the main kitchen, but being committed DIYers and bargain hunters, it may be a while (although I do have the sink and faucet already...tee-hee). The main point of upgrading the breakfast room NOW was to gain a dishwasher and counterspace. I'd be glad to post pics if anyone's interested, but it's really not that big a thing.

Maddiemom,

Vintage windows...sigh...my favorite!

I scored three windows a few years ago (1800s Dutch stained glass bakery windows) that I used as window treatments in a very wide, but short, window I had in my last house. Now they are wrapped in bubble wrap, waiting patiently until I find a place for them in the new house. I am thinking of buying (finding) one more really big one (the other three are small) and forming some sort of series on the wall above the couch. Not a for sure thing...more like an idea that is marinating. I love my new house, but all the blank walls are killing me. Can't wait to turn it into a home.

But, first, the kitchen.....

o RE: The legendary Julie Pinkerton

I love so many of the kitchens mentioned. NorcalNancy's kitchen is stunning. LOVE her counters. I was considering soapstone - before I saw these. I have been mostly lurking for sometime and had stopped posting since my kitchen redo went on hold. I thought I would add her link though.

I am waiting (im)patiently this morning for my new fridge and freezer to be delivered. The old ones were on their last leg. Unfortunately it is giving me the urge to start up this redo again and I don't know if I can fight it off much longer!

It wasn't quite ready for "prime time" yet due to the formatting issues that force you to scroll down below the links in order to access the contents of the posting. (Sorry wilsonb! But I appreciate the feedback... shows the blog has usability problems!) I added a blurb to the blog that highlights the scrolling issue. Hopefully this will help until I can fix the problem!

MJsmama and HollySprings ~ eek! Categories!!! But actually that's a great idea, although alot of work. But I'm game... I'd be willing to add a category section to the blog, but I would need help to:
1. determine the categories (what specific categories would you be looking for, and to what granularity (i.e., granite countertops - or - Golden Juparana granite countertops?)
- and -
2. to categorize the members' kitchens.
Would anyone be willing to help?

Susan ~ Thanks for the offer! I'll email you soon. (Going out of town for a few days and won't have access to internet. [I may go nuts!!] Should be back online next Monday.)

baytoshore ~ I will start a new post in both the discussion and gallery forums.

Susan, maddiemom6, vasheri and, of course, Sweeby ~ can't wait to see your finished kitchens!

Thank you Starpooh. You are the greatest! Another finished kitchen to add might be Riverrat's kitchen. I have not seen it in awhile, but I remembered being impressed. If my memory serves me correctly, it has two islands.

Echo the comment about RiverRat's kitchen -- gorgeous! And very unique.

What kind of refrigerator did Julie Pinkerton get in her kitchen I like the chalk board at the top. I posted a link to it I hope it works.

This is from her old post re: refrig.:
The Amana is their counter depth model BB20V1S. The cabinet maker made the door with the chalkboard panel insert. But it wasnt without problems... the full length Amana handle, which is part of the trim kit, had to be removed at a metal fabricator shop. Once the panel was in and the handle/end piece on, there was almost no room to put your hand behind the handle. Make sense? So in removing the Amana handles, we just ordered a couple more Top Knob pulls. In the end, it looks much better this way. The Amana specs simply didnt state that there configuration would really only work with a flat panel.

Thank You. I thought it was an Amana.

Here is the link to Warren's kitchen that Ivette mentions above. It has been on my list of favorites during this whole long process and is a longtime favorite on the Lacanche threads. Also, just to make you all jealous, I have seen Bosche's kitchen and it is even more stunning in person. She designed it all herself, and it is one of the most serene places you could imagine. It was also the first place I saw a Tapmaster, which promptly went on my "must have" list.

Speaking of Warren's kitchen ...

Does anyone know where to find those large glass canisters?

I just saw something similar on PB's website. Not the same, but close.

Susan, thanks, but I wonder if they're airtight since they're for the bath?

I am the #1 fan of the Bosches' kitchen. But why in the world have I never seen NorCalNancy's kitchen? It is splendid? I love the sleek sprawling efficiency of this kitchen. Talk about being easy on the eye! Great windows, lovely long stretches of uncluttered countertop. Oof! Better than chocolate.

HanArt, I think these are at least quite similar to Warren's canisters.

NorCalNancy's kitchen is so wonderful; I remember when she posted those pics. Love the avocado and the flamed granite :) Her house is a serious dream house of mine, at least what I can see. And the tulip table goes SO well with the lines of the rest of the kitchen...just a joy forever.

lvmadison, you're right, they are. Someone linked them to me on another thread. I've saved them to my Favorites. Thanks!

NorCalNancy's kitchen is gorgeous! Here's a link to Riverrat's, which is unbelievable, especially if you see the house from the beginning. I can't look at too many other kitchens, as I easily get kitchen-envy :-)
