terriks' Kitchen

Tumbled copper slate backsplash

Contact: terriks (My Page)
Posted on Mon, Nov 12, 07
Link to kitchen photos: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v448/trecile/

Details:
  • Cabinets: cherry stained cabinets
  • Countertop: Tan Brown granite
  • Backsplash: DIY Tumbled copper slate from Dal-Tile. 6 x 6 with a 3" border made up of 1 x 1 mosaics. The grout is "tobacco" by Custom. I painted wood outlet covers with craft paint to match the tile. I used antique copper metallic as a base and an ivy green metallic over top, with a bit of burnt umber.
  • sink: black Moenstone
The tile looks shinier in the pics than it does in real life. It does have a lot of natural shimmer to it though. The sealer did enhance the color.

  • Countertops – Soapstone
  • Backsplash – Subway Ceramics
  • Cabinet latches – Crown Hardware (polished nickel)
  • Faucet – Cifial Highlands Wall-Mount (polished nickel)
  • Sink – Rohl Fireclay single bowl
  • Light fixtures – Original shades in new fixtures from Rejuvenation
  • Undercabinet lighting – Pegasus xenon pucks
  • Paint – Benjamin Moore Weston Flax
  • Appliances:
    Dishwasher - Bosch Integrated 4 cycle SHV46-C13UC
Range - Bosch Integra Pro Electric Range HEI7282
    Range Hood - Zephyr Hurricane
    Refrigerator - Fisher & Paykel E522B
  • Floors – refinished original fir
  • The coverplates are polished nickel in a Deco style from Classic Accents. That's also where I got the push button switches.
    http://www.classicaccents.net/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=CTGY&
    Store_Code=CAI&Category_Code=DN

Kitchen dimensions are 14'7" x 12'9", so it's right around 150 square feet.
The ceilings are about 8'4".
We do not have a microwave. We had one before but rarely used it so we left it out of the design for the new kitchen. If we added one later, we planned to put it on the countertop. The cabinets definitely look creamier in the photos than in real life. In person, they look white rather than off white. When comparing the cabinets to the white subway tiles, however, you can tell that the cabinets are a warmer white. When choosing colors, I was originally attracted by the whitest white (nordic white?), but everyone else seemed to worry that would be too stark. I still wonder whether I should have gone with that white, but my wife prefers the warmer white. It's got maybe a little bit of a yellowish undertone. I got our local Benjamin Moore paint store to color match the cabinet paint. They do a manual color match rather than rely on the computer. We did not get a light rail. I just didn't want that added detail on what were meant to be simple cabinets. I think that all inset cabinets have a cavity underneath. On these cabinets, that cavity is fairly shallow. I chose the Pegasus pucks because they were exceptionally thin allowing me to skip the lightrail.
I got the idea for stopping the backsplash short of the upper cabinets from jgarner53.

Details:
  • Cabinetry: Omega Dynasty (including TV doors and range hood)
  • Countertops: Caesarstone, Misty Carrera
  • Backsplash tile: Meredith Art Tile "Lattice"
  • Mural: Tiles by Mimi (custom)
  • Cooktop: Dacor 36" 6-burner
  • Ovens: Dacor ECD230SCH
  • Microwave drawer: Dacor. Works great! I don't cook much with it, use it for veggies, warming, popcorn but it's very user-friendly. Has sensor reheating ability but we've found that it over-heats using that. The popcorn sensor works great!
  • Hood: Vent-A-Hood
  • Sink: Shaw 39" double-bowl
  • Prep sink: Shaw (15x15)
  • Faucets & pot filler: Rohl
  • Dishwasher: Miele
  • Fridge: KitchenAid (recycled from our old kitchen)
  • Cabinet pulls on white cabinets: basket weave 3", purchased from Hardwarehut.com
  • Wall paint: Benjamin Moore "Philadelphia Cream"
  • Flooring: new, oak, finished on-site
  • The large cabinet in the corner is our appliance "garage".
  • Pendants: Kichler, item #65235
  • The tv is a 21" flatscreen.
  • Pumpkin bread on the counter (come on over!)
We removed 2 interior walls and expanded into a side patio area, increasing our footage by 116'. Eliminating the walls allowed us to have an open kitchen/dining room rather than two separate rooms.

The arched window is either a Marvin or Anderson, I don't remember (we are waiting on white hardware to come in). Something our contractor purchased. The cabinets are 48", exclusive of crown molding. Our ceilings are 9' (we raised them a foot during the remodel). Our base cabinets are almost 2" taller than standard as my husband, myself and kids are taller than average (if that helps with the scale).

Link to kitchen photos: http://www.pbase.com/infinitethought/kitchenAbout our photos: These pictures are made up from a series of wide-angle shots that have been "stitched" together to make a single picture. One of the artifacts in creating this type of panorama is that straight lines can appear bent or curved. The floor tile, drawer faces and cabinets can look curved in some places where they really are NOT.
More photos: http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee235/dougnmallie/Kitchen%20Addition-Remodel/

Details:
  • Cabinets: Shaker in natural cherry were made by our neighbor, Sal.
  • Granite: Tropical Leaf from Brazil (the pictures don't really do it justice)
  • Backsplash: Autumn Gold Slate, Tumbled 4 x 4. The little accent glass is American Olean Green Blend.
  • Sink: Made to order by HandCrafted Metal in 14 ga. Stainless.
  • Hood: 42" Independent, Santa Fe, SNFEI42SS
  • Cooktop: Bluestar, RGTNB36-6B
  • Remote Blower: Fantech, FKD10XL
  • Fridge: Jenn-Air, JS48PPFXDA
  • DW: Jenn-Air, JDB2150AWP
  • Ovens: Thermador, SECD302BP
  • Warming Drawer: Thermador Convection, WD36D
  • Speed Cook/Micro: GE Monogram Advantium ZSC2001FSS
  • Floor: 16" Daltile Donegal Verde through body porcelain with Spectralock epoxy grout.
  • Paint:
The lightest green, Lunar Tide (Lowe's - American Tradition) was used on the ceiling and inside the pantry. Yes, behind the glass door is a pantry.
The medium green, Bayou Shade (Lowe's - American Tradition) is on the wall to the left of the island.
The darker green, LaFonda Wild West Green (Lowe's - American Tradition) is in the nook and outside the pantry.
The red around the windows is Spanish Tile (Lowe's - Valspar).
The pantry is also beautiful inside. Doug built custom shelving and I painted the walls and the selving all Lunar Tide. I wanted an old fashion looking pantry.

Except for the cabinetry and countertops we did ALL the work ourselves.

The ceiling is 8' and the hood is 34" above the the cooktop. (Mfg. recommends 30-36")

The drawer faces under the cooktop measure at 39 3/4" and the bar is 33 1/4". We just tried to maintain a 2-3 inch space between the end of the bar and the edge of the drawer. What was hard for us was the door bar length. Initally I wanted the bar to run the entire length, my hubby wanted something not as dramatic so we chose one a little less than half. We had a great experience with hardware USA on ebay when we bought them.

Banquette dimensions- It is in an L- shape with the short side being 5 feet and the long side nearly 10. The seat is about 18" deep and the height is 18". The cushions are made of super easy clean up naugahide, the back cushions snap directly to the back of the bench and the seats are flippable and they tuck right under the backs. A local canvas/upholstery place came and measured and made our cushions

Cabinets have frameless drawers and framed doors. They are all full overlay as the hinges are on the inside and the style between is invisible. My GC described this as a "Euro Cabinet".

  • Murray-Feiss pendant lighting
  • Knobs/hardware from Lowes
  • Paint: Benjamin Moore Arizona Tan and Behr Fudge Bar
The new kitchen involved demo, all new flooring, new electric, moving gas and plumbing lines, and drywall for the ceiling and one wall. The only things we did not DIY were having the drywall replaced, and the countertop installation.
We ended up taking down a wall between the old kitchen and dining area and turning it into one large room. We turned the old den into our formal dining room, and made the old formal living room into an informal family room.

You can't really tell from the photos, but it looks almost like there is a continuous line from the buffet into the kitchen (the bit of wall separating the rooms as the exception). The furniture in the DR is framed in either wenge (the buffet) or maple (DR table) and all have the same frosted glass as the backsplash.

The Liebherr is a freestanding unit. I do tend to refer to it as the German tank in my kitchen -- it's quite the hunk of stainless steel! There hasn't been one person who's seen the refrigerator who hasn't commented on it (i.e., how much they would like to have one). I'm also amazed at how much it can hold and how quiet it is. It fits a 30" space.

The backsplash is frosted glass that is painted on the back so the silicone that they use to glue it to the wall doesn't show through. On the outer edge next to the recessed wall shelves, they used a strip of a sticky cushioning tape as well, which I believe prevents moisture from getting behind the glass. As far as the joint between the granite and glass, they used a clear, silicone caulk.

As far as the paint on the back of the glass, it's white, although it has an aqua cast. Obviously, the glass can be painted any color to coordinate with a color scheme.

The pet feeding area is 28w x 11h x 14d.

Details:
I have posted bits and pieces but never the whole thing. I was waiting to get an island but that is going to be sometime in the future since I haven't found anything I like yet. I would like it made from reclaimed wood.

We had the kitchen gutted to the studs. This involved removal of lathe and plaster...lots of coal dust. The house had the kitchen in the back ( now a guestroom ) and also had 2 kitchens when it was a duplex in the past. We left it in the center of the house. The last time it was remodeled was in the 80's.

I found old salvaged leaded and stained glass windows to create "transoms" to bring in light. We added a skylight over the area where the Twins are and the exterior french doors in the sunroom were added when we gutted that room . All this was to try and bring in light. The interior french doors were added 4 years ago..they were salvage also.

All of the glass cabinet doors are salvage Arts and Craft windows with the original wavy glass. All hardware on cabinets and drawers is salvaged cast iron. The sinks in the kitchen and sunroom are salvaged soapstone...the sunroom one is an Alberene Quarry sink and has the original tag in place on the front.

Counters around the sink/cooktop are teak. My cab guy made them and I finished them with Waterlox. The counter for the baking area is 30" deep and is soapstone as is the landing area next to the ovens and around the sunroom sink. The counter for the coffee bar is salvaged marble from Columbus GA . It still has the "lip" where the slab overlapped on the old building. The sides are leftover teak since the marble was not quite long enough. This was my idea and gives an inset look . All cabs were local custom. Full-extension glides. 2 Lee Valley pullouts...lower cab by sink and next to Twins.

We have the Caldera gas 36" cooktop, Miele builtin deepfat fryer,Tradewind 1400cfm hood liner w/ custom wood hood, Miele double ovens w/Perfect Clean, Bosch SHU66 dishwasher. Frigidaire Twins. We do not have a disposal and I don't miss it. I have a little galvanized pail.

Most of the art work is photos from our hometown of N.O. The kitchen was my attempt to bring some of that feeling to this house. Lighitng was from lots of different places . The saffron porter pendant light fixture was hand thrown in France and matches the saffron Le Crueset pot.

Gas insert fireplace was done 4 years ago as was tile. The mantle is original. The whole rest of the area around the fireplace is new and was finished with leftover teak . We "found" the chimney when we gutted the room. I cleaned the mortar and sealed it with 2 coats of water-based poly. I designed the cased sheetrock surround as the mantle stuck out after the gutting. It turned out to be a perfect way to showcase my baskets and art.

Floors in kitchen are the original heartpine after sanding and sealing with 4 coats oil poly. Sunroom floor is reclaimed pine panels from the 1940's made into a floor by my floor refinisher.

The ceiling was raised back up to 10 1/2 ft from 9 ft...rest of house is 12 ft. The vent for the fireplace and the hood both are ducted in the new ceiling. Below is a picture of the fireplace wall and coffee area w/ marble, the rest are at the link. I could never have done this without all the info. I got on this and the appliance forum.

  • Washer/dryer cabinet built with studs removed behind it for extra depth, plus external cold air supply so dryer can run with doors shut. Booze storage above, with hidden removable back panel to access plugs for washer, dryer, and floodstop.
My only two regrets are the sink (minor, but food particles don't smoothly go down the drain and it takes a while to wash everything down) and the honed absolute black granite (a bit hard to keep looking nice (but microfiber towels work great) and you have to keep aluminum away from it (puts marks on it)).
