Details:
  • Cabinets: custom, painted sage with coffee glaze. The wooden hood is custom made based on a stone hood photo that I showed the cabinetmaker.
  • Countertop: The granite is Imperial Gold.
  • Backsplash: Durango Gold with pewter accent tiles behind the range.
  • Island: mahogany butcherblock made by a local woodworker. I use Boos Mystery Oil on it. I designed the island and our cabinetmaker built it. It's painted black, distressed finish with turned English legs.
  • The farm sink is Shaw's Original, single bowl.
  • The prep sink is Rohl Allia.
  • Both faucets are Rohl Country in satin nickel.

The kitchen does fit the house; it's English Cottage inspired with changes for our lifestyle, climate and setting.

An interesting note about the raised part of the island. We originally didn't realize (nor did our GC) that the pillar was holding up the second floor of our house. We all thought it was just decorative, so we designed and ordered our cabinets with the pillar gone. The raised part of the island was supposed to be long and straight. When we discovered that the pillar had to stay, we built the freeform, curvy raised bar. We did this by cutting a template out of a cardboard appliance box until we liked the shape! We call it the question mark because that's what it looked like, and we love it now and are glad the pillar had to stay.

  • Furniture: new table and chairs someday soon
  • Walls: Benjamin Moore Scenic Drive 697

This kitchen is in a 1970s colonial style tract house. The space is only 11 x 19, too small for an island. The goal of the remodel was to get more counter space by (1) pushing the sink and cooktop as far apart as possible and (2) moving the frig into the space of the existing pantry. Fortunately, the pantry was already 29 inches deep so depth wasn't an issue. One of the challenges was that the plumbing for the bathroom above runs over the sink. We were able to reduce the soffits from 12 inches to six and hide most of that with moldings. Another important change was pulling the cabinets back a few inches from the windows and doorways so that the green paint would be a contrast. This has made a tremendous difference: the sink window looks enormous now, even though it is exactly the same as before. Less really is more (grin).

The green on the walls is a color that we have used in our houses for more than a decade. It was chosen to coordinate with the Sanderson collection of William Morris fabrics. Turns out that BM has made it one of their feature colors for 2007, so we have become trendy despite our best efforts to the contrary (grin). The design inspiration for the kitchen was the cover of a Rutt brochure. We did the kitchen layout and then our local CWP dealer fine-tuned the cabinet specification.

A happy surprise was the discovery of the White Fantasy granite. Based on web searches, we were expecting to use Verde San Francisco or Verde Maritaka. We went to four granite yards and at the fourth (All Granite and Marble) fell in love with something completely unexpected: a granite that looks exactly like Cararra marble. Everyone who sees it can't believe it is not marble.

Details:
  • Cabinets are Alno Alnotec Pro Brilliant Red and Brilliant Black, with a few items from the Librero collection thrown in.
  • Appliances are GE Profile (some covered in the carcass material of the cabinets.)
  • Sinks and main faucet are Blanco.
  • Pot Filler is Danze.
  • Countertop is Corian Mont Blanc.
  • Hood is Cavaliere.
  • Floor is black slate (diy install).
  • Paint is FPE Grey Cotton in the kitchen, with a couple other tones added in the dining room.
  • Lighting is Lite Source Inc "Studio" series, Lightolier can lights, and Kichler xenon undercabinet and cove lighting. Two of the cabinets also had led strip lighting integrated within them.
The wall art is by Steve Cambronne.
The figs are by Frank Fleming and the birdhouse is by Brenda Dailey-Parsons. She doesn’t appear to have a website, but her work in clay is exquisite. The coffee sign is also by Steve Cambronne.
Cooking area. Painting by Grady Barrow and mixed media by Chris Bruno.

Corner next to large opening between dining room and kitchen. Painting by M Blue Horn and clay by Brenda Dailey-Parsons (again). Blue does very interesting work with text in her painting, and does commission work at a very fair price. Can be a great piece of personalized art for someone. See her personal website at Blue (We linked to Naked Art the first time, just because we love Naked Art.)

Dining room wall with cabinetry. We were trying to make this all feel like one room, so we put matching cabinets in here as well. Chair by Richard Jacobus To be fair to Richard, who is a wonderful artist, I’ve provided one of his shots of a very similar chair. My photo doesn’t do it justice.

We started demolition on March 23, 2007. The floors were put in a few days after the jackhammers came in a tore up the previous white tile. What a mess.
The cabinets were custom made by a local cabinet maker. The finish work is great. The lead installer was very meticulous. There were a few mistakes but he either found a way around them or had a drawer redone. He will be back in 4 weeks to complete the end caps.
When the granite was installed the back splash extended beyond the upper 2 end cab's. I did not like the look. I asked if he would stain a piece of wood and this would finish the look. He told me about the end caps. He also has to install the slide out trash basket, the tray divider above the refrig., and all the built in dividers for the drawers. The cabinet maker forgot I ordered all of these (they were in the contract).
The granite is Vitoria Regia. It was fabricated by one of the best men in SE Florida. He did all of the granite and marble at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. This granite is an exotic and a real spluge. When I saw it I had to have it. I wanted a sink made from the same slab that would go on the island. They cut the hole for the sink and that became the bottom of the sink. The sides came from the hole for the cook top. The pieces were put together an epoxied with a layer of mesh under then it was coated with more epoxy. It weights about 300lbs. so they shored it up with steel rods and 2x4's. The cabinet maker also added another 1" thick piece of wood to the inside of the cabinet.I also chose which slabwould go where. The backsplash behind the cooktop was very important to me, it is the first thing you see when you come in my door. The fabricator was very accomodating with the crazy lady that had the crane move the granite top to bottom a few times.
The wine rack and 2 cabinets were added because previously it was dead space. The counter was a strange shape in my family room.
