We started demolition on March 23, 2007. The floors were put in a few days after the jackhammers came in a tore up the previous white tile. What a mess.
The cabinets were custom made by a local cabinet maker. The finish work is great. The lead installer was very meticulous. There were a few mistakes but he either found a way around them or had a drawer redone. He will be back in 4 weeks to complete the end caps.
When the granite was installed the back splash extended beyond the upper 2 end cab's. I did not like the look. I asked if he would stain a piece of wood and this would finish the look. He told me about the end caps. He also has to install the slide out trash basket, the tray divider above the refrig., and all the built in dividers for the drawers. The cabinet maker forgot I ordered all of these (they were in the contract).
The granite is Vitoria Regia. It was fabricated by one of the best men in SE Florida. He did all of the granite and marble at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. This granite is an exotic and a real spluge. When I saw it I had to have it. I wanted a sink made from the same slab that would go on the island. They cut the hole for the sink and that became the bottom of the sink. The sides came from the hole for the cook top. The pieces were put together an epoxied with a layer of mesh under then it was coated with more epoxy. It weights about 300lbs. so they shored it up with steel rods and 2x4's. The cabinet maker also added another 1" thick piece of wood to the inside of the cabinet.I also chose which slabwould go where. The backsplash behind the cooktop was very important to me, it is the first thing you see when you come in my door. The fabricator was very accomodating with the crazy lady that had the crane move the granite top to bottom a few times.
The wine rack and 2 cabinets were added because previously it was dead space. The counter was a strange shape in my family room.
