The drawer faces under the cooktop measure at 39 3/4" and the bar is 33 1/4". We just tried to maintain a 2-3 inch space between the end of the bar and the edge of the drawer. What was hard for us was the door bar length. Initally I wanted the bar to run the entire length, my hubby wanted something not as dramatic so we chose one a little less than half. We had a great experience with hardware USA on ebay when we bought them.

Banquette dimensions- It is in an L- shape with the short side being 5 feet and the long side nearly 10. The seat is about 18" deep and the height is 18". The cushions are made of super easy clean up naugahide, the back cushions snap directly to the back of the bench and the seats are flippable and they tuck right under the backs. A local canvas/upholstery place came and measured and made our cushions

Cabinets have frameless drawers and framed doors. They are all full overlay as the hinges are on the inside and the style between is invisible. My GC described this as a "Euro Cabinet".

  • Maple cabinets from StarMark with base pantry, pull-out pantry, lazy susan, drawers, and a spice organizer.
  • Silestone Rosa Grey counters
  • Porcelain tile flooring
  • Price Pfister faucet
  • Suneli undermount sink
  • Frigidaire appliances (Kenmore microwave)
  • Murray-Feiss pendant lighting
  • Knobs/hardware from Lowes
  • Paint: Benjamin Moore Arizona Tan and Behr Fudge Bar
The new kitchen involved demo, all new flooring, new electric, moving gas and plumbing lines, and drywall for the ceiling and one wall. The only things we did not DIY were having the drywall replaced, and the countertop installation.
We ended up taking down a wall between the old kitchen and dining area and turning it into one large room. We turned the old den into our formal dining room, and made the old formal living room into an informal family room.

  • Granite: Blue Star
You can't really tell from the photos, but it looks almost like there is a continuous line from the buffet into the kitchen (the bit of wall separating the rooms as the exception). The furniture in the DR is framed in either wenge (the buffet) or maple (DR table) and all have the same frosted glass as the backsplash.

The Liebherr is a freestanding unit. I do tend to refer to it as the German tank in my kitchen -- it's quite the hunk of stainless steel! There hasn't been one person who's seen the refrigerator who hasn't commented on it (i.e., how much they would like to have one). I'm also amazed at how much it can hold and how quiet it is. It fits a 30" space.

The backsplash is frosted glass that is painted on the back so the silicone that they use to glue it to the wall doesn't show through. On the outer edge next to the recessed wall shelves, they used a strip of a sticky cushioning tape as well, which I believe prevents moisture from getting behind the glass. As far as the joint between the granite and glass, they used a clear, silicone caulk.

As far as the paint on the back of the glass, it's white, although it has an aqua cast. Obviously, the glass can be painted any color to coordinate with a color scheme.

The pet feeding area is 28w x 11h x 14d.

1890 Kitchen remodel - architectural salvage /White kitchen

Details:
I have posted bits and pieces but never the whole thing. I was waiting to get an island but that is going to be sometime in the future since I haven't found anything I like yet. I would like it made from reclaimed wood.

We had the kitchen gutted to the studs. This involved removal of lathe and plaster...lots of coal dust. The house had the kitchen in the back ( now a guestroom ) and also had 2 kitchens when it was a duplex in the past. We left it in the center of the house. The last time it was remodeled was in the 80's.

I found old salvaged leaded and stained glass windows to create "transoms" to bring in light. We added a skylight over the area where the Twins are and the exterior french doors in the sunroom were added when we gutted that room . All this was to try and bring in light. The interior french doors were added 4 years ago..they were salvage also.

All of the glass cabinet doors are salvage Arts and Craft windows with the original wavy glass. All hardware on cabinets and drawers is salvaged cast iron. The sinks in the kitchen and sunroom are salvaged soapstone...the sunroom one is an Alberene Quarry sink and has the original tag in place on the front.

Counters around the sink/cooktop are teak. My cab guy made them and I finished them with Waterlox. The counter for the baking area is 30" deep and is soapstone as is the landing area next to the ovens and around the sunroom sink. The counter for the coffee bar is salvaged marble from Columbus GA . It still has the "lip" where the slab overlapped on the old building. The sides are leftover teak since the marble was not quite long enough. This was my idea and gives an inset look . All cabs were local custom. Full-extension glides. 2 Lee Valley pullouts...lower cab by sink and next to Twins.

We have the Caldera gas 36" cooktop, Miele builtin deepfat fryer,Tradewind 1400cfm hood liner w/ custom wood hood, Miele double ovens w/Perfect Clean, Bosch SHU66 dishwasher. Frigidaire Twins. We do not have a disposal and I don't miss it. I have a little galvanized pail.

Most of the art work is photos from our hometown of N.O. The kitchen was my attempt to bring some of that feeling to this house. Lighitng was from lots of different places . The saffron porter pendant light fixture was hand thrown in France and matches the saffron Le Crueset pot.

Gas insert fireplace was done 4 years ago as was tile. The mantle is original. The whole rest of the area around the fireplace is new and was finished with leftover teak . We "found" the chimney when we gutted the room. I cleaned the mortar and sealed it with 2 coats of water-based poly. I designed the cased sheetrock surround as the mantle stuck out after the gutting. It turned out to be a perfect way to showcase my baskets and art.

Floors in kitchen are the original heartpine after sanding and sealing with 4 coats oil poly. Sunroom floor is reclaimed pine panels from the 1940's made into a floor by my floor refinisher.

The ceiling was raised back up to 10 1/2 ft from 9 ft...rest of house is 12 ft. The vent for the fireplace and the hood both are ducted in the new ceiling. Below is a picture of the fireplace wall and coffee area w/ marble, the rest are at the link. I could never have done this without all the info. I got on this and the appliance forum.

Details:
  • Home style: Bauhaus modern, built in 1965, white vertical siding, walls of glass.
  • Cabinets: Custom curly sycamore on Medex with maple plywood boxes, Valli & Valli pulls, soft-close drawers.
  • Countertops: 3cm Honed Absoulte black.
  • Bartop: 8/8 African Pearwood (Moabi), bookmatched slabs.
  • Backsplash: Bisazza Logos 24"x24" glass aglomerate tile
  • Shades: Draper Flexshade motorized shades
  • Lighting: 6" cans with Crestron infiNet dimmers/controllers; Seagul 12v Xenon undercabinet, with transformer hidden behind false panel above range hood.
  • Appliances:
Thermador Freedom 18" freezer and 30" fridge
    Bluestar RNB36 6-burner range
    Kitchenaid built-in microwave
    Miele dishwasher
    Miele washer & dryer
KWC Matterhorn sink & Blanco Precision prep sink
Hans Grohe ADA compliant pull-down faucets
    Hunley InstaHot dispenser w/ filter
Special features:
  • Fridge / Freezer panel extends to ceiling; Freezer trim bezel elminated for cleaner look.
  • Floodstop of ice dispenser and washer, connect to alarm in Crestron control system
Dynaudio in-ceiling speaker connected to basement audio rack
  • 4 large pots-and-pans drawers.
  • Custom dividers in 4 main cutlery / sharps / utensil drawers
  • Pull-out shelf in cabinet for toaster oven and coffee grinder
  • "McDonalds" style hidden custom trash can with pull-out wood trashcan on casters
  • Undercabinet paper towel dispenser and 2 plastic bag recycling / dispensers.
  • Pneumatic pushbutton disposer buttons.
  • Never-MT soap dispensers
  • Aluminum plug mold with blank section behind sink (on GFCI)
  • Hood lights wired to undercabinet dimmer.
  • Phone niche with false panel concealing outlet, phone/internet/cable connections, and wireless access point.
  • 4 drawers with in-drawer plugmold, wired to retractile cord and plugged into hidden outlets behind drawers.
  • Food pantry drawers, 2 shallow ones for cans, 2 deep ones for containers, plus upper cabinet with 4 pull-out trays behind a door.
  • Washer/dryer cabinet built with studs removed behind it for extra depth, plus external cold air supply so dryer can run with doors shut. Booze storage above, with hidden removable back panel to access plugs for washer, dryer, and floodstop.
My only two regrets are the sink (minor, but food particles don't smoothly go down the drain and it takes a while to wash everything down) and the honed absolute black granite (a bit hard to keep looking nice (but microfiber towels work great) and you have to keep aluminum away from it (puts marks on it)).

bamaspice's Kitchen

My DIY is finally finished

Contact: bamaspice (My Page)
Posted on Thu, Feb 22, 07
Link to kitchen photos: http://www.photobucket.com/albums/n298/bamaspice/

Details:
  • The cabinets are Wellborn White thermofoil laminate cabinets. We peeled the laminate off it came off in sheets and underneath was the orange mdf. We then sanded, primed with Behr premium primer and painted with Lowe's American Tradition Jekyll Club Veranda Ivory latex paint. I glazed the cabinets with raw umber glaze from lowe's. The island is American Tradition Safari Brown. I drew the legs and our handyman cut them out for me.
  • The backsplash was a shiny white plain tile and I thought I could remove it without destroying the drywall..I was wrong...I now know how to replace drywall. The tile is Daltile's Splitface mosaic in Sienna Classico. I installed the tile by myself and I'm really happy with it. I saved about $400 by ordering it from thefloooringmarket.com. The tile behind the stove is hanging on top of the tile. It is made of resin and was on clearance at Fred's Super Dollar Store for $12.
  • The granite is Santa Rita. We hired someone to install the granite.
  • The Hardware I got on ebay for $1 a cup pull and .50 a knob. It's Liberty Antique Brass from a company called Cripe Distributing. The pulls were made to stand off the cabinets but I made the holes bigger to make the pulls flush. The outlets as you can see in the upclose pictures are in a standard place...I worried about then but bought natural wood outlet covers at home depot and you really don't notice them.
  • The walls are SW flowerpot

redrange's Kitchen

Finished kitchen - red, yellow, and blue

Contact: redrange (My Page)
Posted on Mon, Jun 18, 07
Links to kitchen photos:

Details:
  • Cabinets: Ikea, painted by our housepainter, and much modified in configuration thanks to the IkeaFans website. They're Ikea Tidaholm. Our painter sanded them, put on a coat of grey z-prime, put on an undercoat of color (black for the blue cabinets, ochre/orange for the yellow), did the top coat of color (I don't know the specific names of the blue and yellow), sanded through the top coat to reveal bits of undercoat, and then topped it all off with a clear coat of some sort of varnish used on floors. It was labor intensive, but he kept saying how excited he was to be doing it because he got to be creative. The blue is a little darker in person.
  • Range: Bluestar in Ruby Red
  • Hood: Modern Aire in Ruby Red
  • Counters: soapstone (two or three different types - our stone guy had extra slabs from previous jobs, so we did more stone countertop than originally planned)
  • Butcher block counter: Ikea, beech
  • Hardware: RK International
  • Tile backsplash: handpainted/glazed by me
  • Mirror/iron thing behind stove: Victorian cast iron overmantel from a fireplace
  • Pot racks: The Metal Peddler
  • Fridge, DW: Jenn Air with custom copper panels
  • Sinks: copper one from Handcrafted Metal; soapstone from Vermont Soapstone
  • Faucets: Moen Aberdeen
  • Floors: reclaimed/remilled VG fir from AltruWood (the wood used to be beams in the Pendleton Woolen Mills in Oregon, my home state), finished with OSMO Polyx Oil
  • Shelves: brackets from VanDyke's, shelves in VG fir
  • the paper towel holder is from Storables.
  • The painting "Crow and Chickadee" is by Beth Sautter - add .com to her name and you'll get her website.
  • The ModernAire hood is model PS1130, 54" wide and 30" tall, with chrome lip, rack, and bands. The 1400 CFM fan is on backorder, so I can't yet report on its performance.
The tall pantry is 15" wide and 80" tall (24" deep). We bought a couple extra interior drawers for it. It holds about 2/3 of our non-refrigerated food, including my ever-growing collection of oils and vinegars.

The copper panels were made by a sheet metal guy our GC knows. We gave him the schematics that came with the JennAir appliances and he figured out the best way to do the panels. Some of them have returns on the edges -- like the lid of a shoebox -- and some of them have filler (cardboard?) between the copper and the actual door.

The tiles were one of those things where you get yourself into a project without realizing the scope until it's too late. I wanted antique Dutch tiles, or even modern Dutch tiles that were painted, not printed, but there was no way they'd fit in the budget. So I went to a pottery supply store, bought bisque tiles, bought glazes, and went to work. The pottery supply place also fired the tiles for me, for way cheaper than any of the 'paint your own' pottery places. In the end, I not only did the kitchen backsplash but also wrote out some quotations in red glaze for the bathroom, and painted pictures of animals for the fireplace surround. In all, I painted over 300 tiles. It took me a year. :o Like I said, I didn't realize the scope when I first started out. On the bright side, each finished tile cost about a dollar, and it provided a hobby.

Drawers have those automatic closing hinge-thingies – LOVE THEM!!
New seeded glass in hutch cabinet with smoked grey mirror below. LOVE IT.

  • Lacanche Cluny 1400 in matte black with stainless & chrome (warming cabinet, gas oven, electric oven, 5 burners w/ portable simmer plate)... I really can't say enough about this masterpiece! No bells and whistles - no hassles! LOVE IT!
  • Walker Zanger 4 X 8 white subway tile backsplash with shelf and surround. LOVE IT!
  • Jenn-Air DW - not fully installed with panel and rubber seal yet, so it's pretty noisy. Cleans very well, but doesn't dry all the way. LIKE IT OK.
  • Price Pfister faucet in polished chrome. Heard they drip, but no real issues. LIKE IT A LOT.
  • Under mount fireclay farmhouse sink found on Ebay. I wish the tubs were deeper, but it cleans up well with astonish paste. LOVE IT.
  • Under counter halogen lights are great, but are really hot. They even warm the food in the cupboards. We are switching to fluorescent. LIKE IT.
