Introduction:
Completed October 2012
Design considerations: we wanted a bright contemporary look that was inviting and uncluttered. We wanted mostly light surfaces because we were concerned the room might be dark. The kitchen faces north and the one window has an overhang from the master above. We also needed to be budget-aware which we mostly followed with the exception of one big splurge (details below). We loved the look of grain-matched walnut and after a visit to SemiHandMade in Southern California, we decided to go with their custom drawer fronts. I'm the cook and wanted a good expanse of work surfaces. My husband is the clean up guy so he researched and chose the sink and dishwasher.
The island is 60" x 30". In order to have an overhang for seating, we needed to have drawers that were 18" deep. Ikea doesn't sell 18" deep drawers, so we ordered these from Sherr's in the custom size we needed. The walnut end and back side of the island were made by a finish carpenter we hired who wrapped it with a mix of walnut veneer and solid walnut to our specification.

Things we had to compromise on:
- no room for a double oven and separate cook top
- clearance behind the island is slightly less than ideal
- more filler by the upper cabinets next to the sink than we'd prefer, needed for symmetry
Things that didn't work out the way we thought
- the window was supposed to come down to the counter
- the finished sink wall was 2"" narrower than planned, which meant we had to cut down the drawer fronts of a 24"" cabinet to 18"" and leave a little gap at the end of the corner cabinet (not visible)
- the corner cabinet needed a lot more door clearance than we thought, so the stove wall had to be adjusted
- the Abstrakt doors and deco strips show every nail and ding, and so were difficult to use at the top of the cabinets where they needed to be mitred.

Introduction:
This was a new build completed in June 2012.
When I started planning my kitchen I was looking for a simple, quiet space with lots of natural light. In flipping through kitchen magazines I was always drawn to white cabinets with black honed granite countertops, but I didn't think it would be practical for my family. I went through phases where I wanted natural maple, then quartersawn oak, then gray painted, then dark stained wood, then back to quartersawn oak, and finally to white.
I've always liked marble and briefly considered a marble or marble-look quartz countertop. I ultimately decided I would rather have a solid black countertop with a marble backsplash.
My kitchen is completely open to the great room and dining area, but it was not that way in the original plan. It took me a long time to let go of any sort of wall or raised peninsula to separate it from the great room.
I'm glad I spent nearly a year planning my kitchen - the end result is so much better than it would have been.

We were living in China for over 5 years
and I had to do all of my planning for the remodel of our 1889 house from there.
Our dog's name is "Rocket". He is 7 years old and has no clue that he lived in China. He has also has no idea that his fur is seems to be a perfect match for BM "Bone White." I could have used him for a furry, living, paint chip!

We built a new home in 2012. Our kitchen was finished in June 2012. The overall style of our home is "Southern" even though we live in the Midwest. We just love Southern homes.

Introduction:
2010 Kitchen Remodel in Northern Virginia. Started with 1988 builder grade kitchen. No major structural changes in remodel.
Kitchen Highlights:
- Cabinets- Shiloh, inset beaded soft white with slate highlighting and brushing. Tons of details on these, everything is upgraded and pull out or soft glide, etc. They were our biggest expense.
- Kitchen Table- Antique tables made daily. Chairs painted and distressed from my old set
- New Windows (expanded in kitchen, replaced in entire house)- OKNA. And very glad I went with casement in kitchen in the end as I wasn't going to originally.
- Pendants- Mercury glass, shades of light
- Range- GE Monogram 36 inch dual fuel with grill (love it)
- Sink- Shaw 3018 (love it), also got the stainless grid, love it too.
- Prep Sink- Rohl Round 18 inch with Tapmaster (tapmaster nice but not end of world if not)
- Faucets- same for both sinks, Delta Leland single hole
- Air switches- from home depot (very frustrating. Don�t place these near a faucet handle!)
- Floors- Character walnut random width, distressed edges, Waterlox finish, Blackford and Sons. LOVE!
- Vent- GE, free with range 1200 CFMs, loud but works and free is free
- Undercabinet lights- seagull ambiance lighting on dimmer, great lights
- Disposals- Evolution and Evolution compact, no trouble
- Dishwasher- Meihl, some trouble here. Had a flood already! Due to filling the soap dispenser up with soap, apparently a BIG no-no.
- Backsplash- subway, Emser cape code in artisan cream crackle ordered from Studio Tile in Fl for around 14/ft, Above range, not sure, some small mosaic from a local store.
- Hardware- cabinets, hafele antique black, doors ordered online , Emtek black ordered from simpsons hardware
- Paint- Ben Moore Algonkian Trail, eggshell
