Introduction:
We moved into this house 18 years ago. I had been wanting to remodel it for about 8 years. We finally got things ready to do it and in the fall of 2013 we began interviewing contractors. We signed a contract in January 2014. We agreed to use a custom cabinetmaker because of some of the strange configurations in our kitchen. We had seen his work and knew it was good. We also knew he was slow and has several projects in the works. So, we didn't start the tear down until the cabinetmaker was close to done. The time from the tear down to the last day the contractor worked here was 8 weeks. One week we were on vacation so the work itself took 7 weeks. Work completed July 2014.
The challenges of this kitchen on its own architecturally and my own limits (time frame and no knocking down walls) meant I had to keep the same footprint. The house is on a slab and the roof is flat – which means electrical really needs to go through walls. We did the work to California code which meant some upgrades but not as many because we kept the footprint. Anything else would have opened a huge can of worms in time, labor and expense.
I think we made great use of the existing space. There is now much more cabinet and counter space. There are specific cooking, cleaning and prep areas. It is so much more efficient and functional. We enlarged the total useable countertop area, added more cabinets that were efficiently designed for the space, replaced the window, made space for the microwave, installed a functional range hood so that it actually works and increased the number of electrical outlets. The granite is a great improvement over the tile counters. I have always enjoyed cooking and baking but this makes it so much nicer. Decisions were also made to try to make things easy to clean so I wouldn’t be spending my days scrubbing and dusting everything. While I knew I would really enjoy the granite counters and more drawers I have found myself surprised at how much I like the slightly larger sink, high arc faucet, new refrigerator and just having the microwave off the countertop. I also enjoy just staring at the backsplash.

The biggest snag in the remodel was the floor. We found we had moisture issues and the floor had to be leveled in spots. Fixing those issues were time consuming and expensive. We also learned the venting to the outside for the range hood was done improperly but that didn’t require much additional work.

Introduction:
This was a new build completed in June 2012.
When I started planning my kitchen I was looking for a simple, quiet space with lots of natural light. In flipping through kitchen magazines I was always drawn to white cabinets with black honed granite countertops, but I didn't think it would be practical for my family. I went through phases where I wanted natural maple, then quartersawn oak, then gray painted, then dark stained wood, then back to quartersawn oak, and finally to white.
I've always liked marble and briefly considered a marble or marble-look quartz countertop. I ultimately decided I would rather have a solid black countertop with a marble backsplash.
My kitchen is completely open to the great room and dining area, but it was not that way in the original plan. It took me a long time to let go of any sort of wall or raised peninsula to separate it from the great room.
I'm glad I spent nearly a year planning my kitchen - the end result is so much better than it would have been.

Introduction:
A 1978 Split Entry small kitchen remodel completed in 2012. We took down a wall, creating an open space consisting of the kitchen, dining room, and living room. The original appliance footprint remained, except for the refrigerator which was moved to an adjoining wall, right against the original water source for the frig, which simplified the plumbing.
We chose a few unconventional features for all the right reasons, as we love its look and utility:
1. We wanted the stove on the island, and keeping the original footprint made it even more economical. But being able to see out windows and into the living space, since we spend most of our prep time next to the stove anyway, has been sheer joy.
2. We debated pros and cons of an open concept, of an island, of a raised bar. At the end of the day, we needed to maximize space, but with some sort of demarcation between kitchen and living room. So, we chose complimentary cabinet colors that differed from the wall cabs (green and stained respectively) and two complimentary quartz countertops (Silestone Zirconium on top of the stained cabs; and Lyra on top of the green island cabs). From a common design wisdom point of view, this was not considered a wise idea, but it has given us exactly what we want - a sense of difference yet compatibility in this open space.
3. We fell in love with stainless steal materials for the backsplash. We didn't want it to look cold and industrial, rather modern craftsman unique ... Hopefully, that's what we created. We feared that homemade pattern and assembly would look too much like a child's art project permanently fixed in an adult's ""real"" kitchen, but we LOVE the homemade imperfections. The bs is the item people immediately come in an touch and oh and Ahh over.
4. The raised island bar/nested Ls - the best of all possible designs, in our opinion. Each area of our island has / is dedicated space. The raised bar is great for eating, working. It stays clean and away from food prep. And it provides enough visual block into the kitchen without blocking an open feel or window view. The lower L...the work space on each side of that oven...oh my...heaven! And then the open level space next to the frig - perfect spot for a flat open surface, from putting groceries away, to cold food prep, to using various appliances stored underneath.

Opinions: Our next project will involve finding a way to relocate our steps as the split entry places a walkway next to a staircase. It isn't directly related to the kitchen, but is more noticeable now as a design flaw in our space.
The design feature I regret is the bump out at the sink. It forces the sink to sit further back. I have to lean forward a bit more - not easy on the back.

We bought the house in summer 2010 intending to do a kitchen remodel as soon as possible. Design discussions started in Fall 2010, and work started in January. The project was completed in May 2011.
We removed a large portion of a wall to expand the kitchen's size significantly, as well as opening up another wall above a staircase. New floors, cabinets, and appliances finished up the project.
