Link to kitchen photos: http://www.pbase.com/infinitethought/kitchenAbout our photos: These pictures are made up from a series of wide-angle shots that have been "stitched" together to make a single picture. One of the artifacts in creating this type of panorama is that straight lines can appear bent or curved. The floor tile, drawer faces and cabinets can look curved in some places where they really are NOT.

Details:
  • Cabinets: Shaker in natural cherry were made by our neighbor, Sal.
  • Granite: Tropical Leaf from Brazil (the pictures don't really do it justice)
  • Backsplash: Autumn Gold Slate, Tumbled 4 x 4. The little accent glass is American Olean Green Blend.
  • Sink: Made to order by HandCrafted Metal in 14 ga. Stainless.
  • Hood: 42" Independent, Santa Fe, SNFEI42SS
  • Cooktop: Bluestar, RGTNB36-6B
  • Remote Blower: Fantech, FKD10XL
  • Fridge: Jenn-Air, JS48PPFXDA
  • DW: Jenn-Air, JDB2150AWP
  • Ovens: Thermador, SECD302BP
  • Warming Drawer: Thermador Convection, WD36D
  • Speed Cook/Micro: GE Monogram Advantium ZSC2001FSS
  • Floor: 16" Daltile Donegal Verde through body porcelain with Spectralock epoxy grout.
  • Paint:
The lightest green, Lunar Tide (Lowe's - American Tradition) was used on the ceiling and inside the pantry. Yes, behind the glass door is a pantry.
The medium green, Bayou Shade (Lowe's - American Tradition) is on the wall to the left of the island.
The darker green, LaFonda Wild West Green (Lowe's - American Tradition) is in the nook and outside the pantry.
The red around the windows is Spanish Tile (Lowe's - Valspar).
The pantry is also beautiful inside. Doug built custom shelving and I painted the walls and the selving all Lunar Tide. I wanted an old fashion looking pantry.

Except for the cabinetry and countertops we did ALL the work ourselves.

The ceiling is 8' and the hood is 34" above the the cooktop. (Mfg. recommends 30-36")

Galley Kitchen with Hickory Cabinets and Slate Backsplash

Introduction:
This was/is a DIY project.  The kitchen was gutted to the studs and a new "L" shaped wall was added to make room for the double oven.  The gutting took place on December 13, 2003 and the flooring was just installed in January of this year.  It's been a long process, but sometimes you run into surprises.  My surprise was in taking the yucky sheetrock off the dining room and finding the walls underneath were all rotted out.  So, a side delay of ripping the DR off to the concrete slab and starting over completely.

Everything in the kitchen is new - except the DW (which was new 3 years ago).  All of the plumbing was redone (the basement ceiling looked like a racetrack and made six or seven loops instead of a straight line), some gas was re-routed and the ductwork to the kitchen and DR areas was redone.  Rough project cost was about $14K.  You can save literally thousands by DIY'ing it if you have the time, patience and friends to help.  In order to get all I wanted, I shopped eBay and Appliancesmart.  Shopping frequently at scratch/dent places for appliances can really pay off.  To this day no-one has noticed the scratch on the DO that saved me $2k on its price.  The WD was bought as a surplus item for 75% retail.  I had similar luck with all the other appliances as well.

Details:
This is my finished galley kitchen. It is 15 x 8 and it has been a little over a year from the date that I gutted the old one.
  • Cabinetry ~ Premier Cabinets in the "Worthington Style". They are hickory with walnut pegs in each corner. The finish is a stain called "Amber Spice"
  • Hardware ~ Mission style knobs from the Belwith-Keeler collection ~ purchased on eBay for $1/piece
  • Countertop ~ Nevamar laminate in "Green Matrix" with a no-drip edge and flat-deck (no added 4" backsplash)
  • Sink ~ the 4-hole Kohler Staccato (eBay purchase)
  • Faucet ~ Price Pfister "Marielle" in the ORB finish (again, an eBay find)
  • Cook top ~ Jenn-air
  • Fridge ~ KA Superba
  • Double Oven ~ KA upper/lower convection
  • Warming Drawer ~ KA Classic Series
  • OTR MW ~ KA Microhood combo
  • Flooring ~ Engineered hardwood in cherry ~ from Sun Paratech (this runs throughout LR and DR)
  • Backsplash ~ Slate  ~ natural slate from India ~ purchased from HD for $1/sq. ft ~ (also in entry way). The slate backsplash was both color-enhanced and sealed with a silicon impregnator.  The color-enhancer is this one made by Stone Care International.  The silicon impregnator is this one, made by HMK.  Both were very easy to apply and there was really no smell/odor involved.
  • Paint ~ the red/brick is "Flower Pot" by SW, the dark yellow/gold is "Honeycomb" from SW and the light yellow is "Harvester" from SW
  • Outlet Covers ~ in slate to match the backsplash ~ made for me by a friend
  • Outlet Covers for DR ~ a friend is making some very similar to these for me in copper - I just have to get the hammering done on them and they are ready to put up

Introduction:
My kitchen "facelift" is 99% complete. I just need to add some switchplates and the undercabinet lighting. The house is 9 1/2 years old and the kitchen needed an update. Like many before me I want to thank everyone on this forum for your help, ideas and support. I know I am happier with the way the kitchen turned out as a result of the ideas I've gotten and the things I've learned here. And having this forum to turn to during the rough patches truly helped my anxiety level

Details:
  • Perimeter cabinets are original - painted in Vellum by Porter with chesnut glaze - upgraded molding
  • Island and fridge cabs are Kraftmaid birch with chocolate glaze
  • Countertops - Tropic Brown granite
  • Cooktop - Kitchenaid
  • Sink - Elkay double bowl
  • Faucet - Kohler Vinnata (like you didn't know)
  • Backsplash - Daltile Continental Slate in Brazilian green with natural slate border
  • Wine Cooler - GE Profile
  • My oven and microwave are originial to the house and are 9 1/2 years old. They are JennAir.
  • The cooktop is new, it is Kitchenaid model #KGCS105GSS with a retractable downdraft vent in back.
We never used the desk area as a desk so that big hole underneath was just wasted space. We love wine so that seemed like a better option, (looks cool too).
The backsplash was the first element I chose for the kitchen. I wish the photos could do justice to the colors, it's got a lot of variation and is very organic looking. My granite is Tropic Brown which can vary quite a bit, I specifically chose slabs that have green undertones with clear black specks and I'm very happy with the way it looks with the backsplash.
