14. Kitchen Additional Comments
Opinions:    "Happy with the flow.  Love base drawers for pots and pans. Cabinets very easy to clean.  Color choices lend to a calm feeling.  We have limited space and tried to cram in a lot of features. Would have sacrificed smaller upper cabinet and lower pantry pullout to allow for super Susan below instead of blind corner cabinet.  Corner upper easy reach could have been larger.

Soapstone is a dream though currently having issues with water spots. Plan to touch base with fabricator to work this out. Would not have chosen a different material even if I had known this beforehand. Just love the softness to the touch and vintage feeling it gives to the whole space. "

Kitchen Cost:
  • Cabinets-$12,000
  • Soapstone-$4,900
  • GC-$42,000 (includes wood floor, UCL, recessed lighting)
  • Appliances-$6800
  • Backsplash tile-$437
  • Faucet-$415
  • Pulls/knobs-$250
  • Disposal-$200
  • Air switch-$56

Details:
  • Cabinets: custom, painted Alabaster white
  • Countertops: Soapstone on the island, marble on the two counters between the DR and kitchen and also on the desk in the office and stainless steel on the counters and backsplash along the stove wall
  • Backsplash: stainless steel
  • Flooring: I didn't "love" any flooring so picked up some cheap porcelein tile
  • Wall paint: Alabaster white
  • The over the door spice rack from Container store
Favorites: Pull out trash, pull out cookies sheet drawer and another pull out cookie sheet drawer that we are using for our most used pans and skillets. Best drawer ever. Love the pantry and I've never had one. Will probably add a third door to the pantry because there is shelving back there and it's way too hard to use. Original plan was a sliding rack to hold cans, etc but that never happened and I like it the way it is. Spice rack - I spent hours on the internet and in stores looking for a large rack. Finally made it to the container store and they had the components to do an over the door rack with as many shelves as you need. I may add one on the other door for can storage and free up some of the shelves for dishes. I like the two work stations at the desk. I still have two kids at home, 12 & 14, and the extra work spot and computer are so handy when 2 or 3 of us needs/wants to be on the computer at the same time. Very handy.
Regrets: The "planner" I used wasn't specifically a kitchen planner. She did have some good ideas and she was the subcontrator for the kitchen cabinets. That turned out to be a 4 month nightmare. Ended up hiring someone else to finish and rebuild most of the cabinets. What's done is done but I'll never (famous last words) have work done like that without references. The contractor recommended her but she flaked on them too. When planning the kitchen I expressed a concern to her about not having enough cabinets and she did some calculations and told me I had way more than I started with. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The kitchen is full and I still have boxes full of dishes. I don't think I would have designed the kitchen differently because I love it the way it is but I wish I had known. The refrigerator: we chose a counter depth 36" wide. I really wanted a 48" and the husband vetoed that. Dumb move. This refrigerator holds so much less than the old one. Now we have our old refrigerator running outside in our old laundry room off of the carport. The island: I wish I had overhang on both ends. There is enough room to have done that and we use all 3 sides but there isn't any overhang on the refrigerator end. I also don't like the pendant lights over the breakfast table. I'm thinking of replacing them with a ceiling fan. This room gets hot when it's a 100 outside.

*eco friendly. BTW, we also used denim insulation and the lighting plan was greened up, including green undercabinet lighting.
Denim Insulation. First, your project has to be down to the studs since this rolls in like typical fiberglass insulation. Then, the cost is about 10% more than standard. For us, it came out to about $200 more. In the grand-scheme of things, $200 wasn't much. We bought ours at Greenmaker Supply in Chicago, because we live just to the west. We also went with FSC certified wood from them.

Details:
  • Cabinets: Ikea, painted by our housepainter, and much modified in configuration thanks to the IkeaFans website. They're Ikea Tidaholm. Our painter sanded them, put on a coat of grey z-prime, put on an undercoat of color (black for the blue cabinets, ochre/orange for the yellow), did the top coat of color (I don't know the specific names of the blue and yellow), sanded through the top coat to reveal bits of undercoat, and then topped it all off with a clear coat of some sort of varnish used on floors. It was labor intensive, but he kept saying how excited he was to be doing it because he got to be creative. The blue is a little darker in person.
  • Range: Bluestar in Ruby Red
  • Hood: Modern Aire in Ruby Red
  • Counters: soapstone (two or three different types - our stone guy had extra slabs from previous jobs, so we did more stone countertop than originally planned)
  • Butcher block counter: Ikea, beech
  • Hardware: RK International
  • Tile backsplash: handpainted/glazed by me
  • Mirror/iron thing behind stove: Victorian cast iron overmantel from a fireplace
  • Pot racks: The Metal Peddler
  • Fridge, DW: Jenn Air with custom copper panels
  • Sinks: copper one from Handcrafted Metal; soapstone from Vermont Soapstone
  • Faucets: Moen Aberdeen
  • Floors: reclaimed/remilled VG fir from AltruWood (the wood used to be beams in the Pendleton Woolen Mills in Oregon, my home state), finished with OSMO Polyx Oil
  • Shelves: brackets from VanDyke's, shelves in VG fir
  • the paper towel holder is from Storables.
  • The painting "Crow and Chickadee" is by Beth Sautter - add .com to her name and you'll get her website.
  • The ModernAire hood is model PS1130, 54" wide and 30" tall, with chrome lip, rack, and bands. The 1400 CFM fan is on backorder, so I can't yet report on its performance.
The tall pantry is 15" wide and 80" tall (24" deep). We bought a couple extra interior drawers for it. It holds about 2/3 of our non-refrigerated food, including my ever-growing collection of oils and vinegars.

The copper panels were made by a sheet metal guy our GC knows. We gave him the schematics that came with the JennAir appliances and he figured out the best way to do the panels. Some of them have returns on the edges -- like the lid of a shoebox -- and some of them have filler (cardboard?) between the copper and the actual door.

The tiles were one of those things where you get yourself into a project without realizing the scope until it's too late. I wanted antique Dutch tiles, or even modern Dutch tiles that were painted, not printed, but there was no way they'd fit in the budget. So I went to a pottery supply store, bought bisque tiles, bought glazes, and went to work. The pottery supply place also fired the tiles for me, for way cheaper than any of the 'paint your own' pottery places. In the end, I not only did the kitchen backsplash but also wrote out some quotations in red glaze for the bathroom, and painted pictures of animals for the fireplace surround. In all, I painted over 300 tiles. It took me a year. :o Like I said, I didn't realize the scope when I first started out. On the bright side, each finished tile cost about a dollar, and it provided a hobby.
