Slate makes a splash in my kitchen update
Posted by Dylemma (My Page) on Sat, Oct 22, 05 at 23:30
We just completed our kitchen "update." I say update because it was not a major
remodel. The cabinets have not been changed, except we added crown molding to the
top and bottom of them when we removed the soffits from the ceiling. We retrofitted
two lower cabinets to make them trash pullouts. I was so willing to sacrifice the
cabinet space to get rid of the two big trashcans we had sitting out before. We added
glass to the doors of two of the cabinets. We also added knobs and pulls to the cabinets
(before we had no hardware). That change alone was worth all the work.
The wood floors were not changed. All the appliances, the countertops, some lighting
and backsplash are new.
I’ve been primarily a lurker on this forum, but I’ve gotten lots of invaluable tips.
Thank you to everyone who shares their experiences so generously and graciously.

Here are some details:
GRANITE: Typhoon Green (gorgeous soft sagey green. I LOVE it) Ogee edge
APPLIANCES: SS Dishwasher, cooktop, microwave, double oven and SxS counter-depth refrigerator by GE Profile
HOOD: Zephyr Savona (very cool looking and works well)
BACKSPLASH TILES: Mixture of Indian Autumn, Copper and Multicolor 6x6 slate
BACKSPLASH INSERTS: 2" glass tile inserts made by Anna Cabo (San Diego tile maker)
GROUT: Moss color
FAUCET: SS Grohe Ladylux Café (really like it)
SINK: SS Franke Orca (LOVE it)
WALL PAINT: Dunn Edwards’ Tickled Crow (a great soft sagey green—it’s not washed out like it looks in the pictures
KNOBS and PULLS: Amerock’s Galleria collection in the Weathered Nickel Copper finish. This hardware is really well made and substantial. The finish shows just a bit of copper through the nickel. PRICEY, but I’m very happy with them. Ordered online from Knob Deco (good service and the best price I could find)
GLASS in CABINET: Light Seedy
LIGHTS: halogen pucks (don’t know the brand) under the cabinets, halogen cans over the sink, regular recessed lighting over the rest of the kitchen
TRASH PULLOUT: Rev-a-Shelf. Two cans for trash in one cabinet and two cans for recycling in the adjacent cabinet. Our kitchen and house has lots of cabinets so it wasn’t really a sacrifice to lose this cabinet space.
RUGS: Two new wool rugs: a 6ft round for in the kitchen bought at Tuesday Morning and a 7’6"x9’6" oval bought from Home Decorators Collection (never heard of this catalog until I started to read this forum). I’m thrilled with both rugs.

Beautiful kitchen. Love the backsplash (and the old floor). Congratulations! |
You did an incredible job. I love it...do you have before pics wi
DH doesn't understand why I want to get rid of our soffit. I'm definitely going to show him your pics. We're going to remodel and keep cabinets and floor. Can't decide if I'm going to paint or not. Yours look great. Love the backsplash. Trish |
