Introduction:
We moved into this house 18 years ago. I had been wanting to remodel it for about 8 years. We finally got things ready to do it and in the fall of 2013 we began interviewing contractors. We signed a contract in January 2014. We agreed to use a custom cabinetmaker because of some of the strange configurations in our kitchen. We had seen his work and knew it was good. We also knew he was slow and has several projects in the works. So, we didn't start the tear down until the cabinetmaker was close to done. The time from the tear down to the last day the contractor worked here was 8 weeks. One week we were on vacation so the work itself took 7 weeks. Work completed July 2014.
The challenges of this kitchen on its own architecturally and my own limits (time frame and no knocking down walls) meant I had to keep the same footprint. The house is on a slab and the roof is flat – which means electrical really needs to go through walls. We did the work to California code which meant some upgrades but not as many because we kept the footprint. Anything else would have opened a huge can of worms in time, labor and expense.
I think we made great use of the existing space. There is now much more cabinet and counter space. There are specific cooking, cleaning and prep areas. It is so much more efficient and functional. We enlarged the total useable countertop area, added more cabinets that were efficiently designed for the space, replaced the window, made space for the microwave, installed a functional range hood so that it actually works and increased the number of electrical outlets. The granite is a great improvement over the tile counters. I have always enjoyed cooking and baking but this makes it so much nicer. Decisions were also made to try to make things easy to clean so I wouldn’t be spending my days scrubbing and dusting everything. While I knew I would really enjoy the granite counters and more drawers I have found myself surprised at how much I like the slightly larger sink, high arc faucet, new refrigerator and just having the microwave off the countertop. I also enjoy just staring at the backsplash.

The biggest snag in the remodel was the floor. We found we had moisture issues and the floor had to be leveled in spots. Fixing those issues were time consuming and expensive. We also learned the venting to the outside for the range hood was done improperly but that didn’t require much additional work.

Opinions: I love my kitchen. It's light and airy yet warm and welcoming at the same time. It's exactly the feel I was going for when I started. I'm so happy with the island quartzite. I think it helps make the kitchen. We get asked about it, the pendants, chandelier and the backsplash the most. It's just a fun, nice place to be!

Background:While my kitchen was fine before, I wanted to love being in it. I wanted more room so we removed the island. I've always wanted a Wolf Range and this was the only way I was getting it. We also desperately needed to lighten it up. Because we only have one tiny window and it's on the west side of our house, we don't get much sun.
I LOVE not having that island. The kitchen was simply too small for an island. It was obtrusive and clustered. I never used it to cook on, so I didn't lose any "prep" space. I felt that I couldn't move in the kitchen before

Details:
- Cabinets - locally made face-frame of birch with inset panel & bead detail on doors, melamine interiors, Blumotion hinges and all the internal bells & whistles.
- Countertops - unoiled Brazilian Black soapstone with radiused corners and eased edge, 3 cm thickness, from Soapstone West in Escondido CA. Runnels by the sink. Mahogany top on the beadboard hutch.
- Backsplash - custom 2.5 x 5" Chardonnay color handmade glazed subway tile by Ken Mason Tile, Long Beach CA.
- Tile Mural - from Tierra y Fuego in San Diego CA. It is a "cuerda seca" ("dry cord") style of Talavera from Guanajuato, Mexico. The design is a Persian rug. We left off the fringes. We found the black quarter-rounds and 3 x 3s at a local tile store at the last minute
- Range - CornuFe in basic black.
- Frig - Liebherr 60" built-in. (Two 30" wide refrigerators above, two freezers below. Opens up like French doors but it's 4 separate compressors)

The kitchen is 18.5' x 9.75'. Ceilings are 8'2" high. The pantry is another 7' long and the laundry another 8', with an exterior door. There is a hallway coming off the pantry that leads to a bath and bedroom. The room adjacent to the beadboard hutch is our breakfast room. The formal dining room adjoins the arch in the foreground of the first photo. Total project involved gutting 350 sf to the studs, reframing, rewiring and replumbing.
There is an HD TV with recessed bracket and concealed mini-amplifier feeding a stereo speaker in the ceiling. A stereo speaker with one woofer and two tweeters. Our contractor was able to create a space within the wall where the swing-arm bracket can reside--thus the TV is almost flush with the wall when retracted. We found that professional A/V guys are all over this stuff.
The windows are brand new, based on a period design that I saw on another home a few blocks away. The center lite is fixed and the side lites open in--that is termed a "pull casement" window.

We hung two wood mantel hoods back-to-back with glass cabinets on the sides.
The range is 30 inches wide and there is a 24 inch counter on each side. The range backs up to a raised bar consisting of two 36 inch wide 42 inch high wall cabinets. The total length of the raised bar is six feet. The counter on top of the bar is narrow--only about 18 inches at its widest point. I didn't want to use that bar for another eating area since we already have 2 dining tables in close proximity.

- Cabinets – Kahles (http://www.kahles.com). Main cabinets are cherry wood cabinets, Laporte Full Overlay w/M-bead raised panels in a toffee stain. Accent cabinets are paint grade maple, Chadds Ford door in a beaded inset style with steeple hinges – painted antique white with brown glaze. All drawers are 5 piece wood, matching cherry wood light rails under the upper cabinets, maple veneer interiors, plywood boxes, wood shelves, dovetail drawer boxes, wainscot panels on all end panels where applicable, full extension soft close drawers, fluting at sink and fluted spindles at range, two different size of crown molding to match depending on height of upper cabinets.

More details:
Our goal was to re-do our 17 year old kitchen, original to the house. The old cabinets were standard builder grade and while looking good on the outside, were showing signs of wear (broken drawer guides, etc) internally. Plus the color scheme was, ummm, just a tad outdated – LOL.
We planned 90% of the kitchen ourselves, from doing research ahead of time, looking at magazines, and using the garden web and other internet resources. We met with 3 different cabinet reps / KDs to obtain quotes from three different cabinet lines – Durasupreme, Shiloh, and Kahle’s (a regional brand based a few hours away from us on PA). We obtained a few different ideas from the various KDs we met with and incorporated them into our vision. Our vision was further defined seeing a display of Omega cabinets at the one showroom which also sold the Shiloh line. This display is what we used in helping us design our plan and look.
In looking at cabinetry, we were impressed with the Shiloh brand’s construction but they had no door styles, finishes that would give us the look we really wanted to achieve. Durasupreme was the least inexpensive of the group but also the least flexible (ie they couldn’t do the special microwave cabinet we wanted to do). It was only by a fluke we came across Kahles. Even though they are based in Pennsylvania, we had never heard of them. But one day, when out looking at appliances, one showroom we stopped at had full type kitchen displays. Some of the cabinets we saw were fantastic – better quality than the Omega custom line we saw at the Shiloh dealer – and we thought they had to be full custom cabinetry. We asked one of the appliance sales people about the cabinets and he said a couple local contractors installed all the cabinets at their facility. We showed him the couple cabinets we liked and he told us they were all installed by a man named Dale Conrad. He gave us his number and we contacted him http://www.conradkitchenandbath.com/
We found out the cabinets were made by a company called Kahle’s – which sells regionally in the eastern part of the US. They are a family run operation and do things the old fashioned way as the quality of their cabinets can attest to (for instance note the full plywood TOPS on the base cabinets). They are based in northwest PA pretty much in the middle of nowhere. http://www.kahles.com/ As you can see from the website, marketing is not their strong suit but making top quality cabinets is. They happened to offer styles and finishes that we were looking for and help us complete our vision. Furthermore, we found Dale to be a forthright man to work with. And while his initial quote came in a lot higher than the other two, we worked together, thru some minor design changes, as well as advantageous scheduling to help him fill some down time to come up with a price that was competitive with the others we had received. Dale told us the job would take about 2 weeks (except waiting for the granite to be fabricated) and he was spot on. His crew was here 9 days and completed 95% of the kitchen, hooked up our old sink / faucet as a temporary sink and then we waited about 3 weeks while the granite was being fabricated. Dale’s crew was back the day of the granite installation to disconnect the temporary sink and faucet, install the new ones after the granite went in and finish up some minor details. Two weeks of work exactly with no issues. The only issue we did encounter was with our DIY backsplash. The tile store initially ordered the wrong material so that delayed me installing it for about 10 days until they had the correct material shipped. Since we didn’t order the tile until the granite was in, this pushed the final completion back slightly.
