Introduction:
This was a new build completed in June 2012.

When I started planning my kitchen I was looking for a simple, quiet space with lots of natural light. In flipping through kitchen magazines I was always drawn to white cabinets with black honed granite countertops, but I didn't think it would be practical for my family. I went through phases where I wanted natural maple, then quartersawn oak, then gray painted, then dark stained wood, then back to quartersawn oak, and finally to white.

I've always liked marble and briefly considered a marble or marble-look quartz countertop. I ultimately decided I would rather have a solid black countertop with a marble backsplash.

My kitchen is completely open to the great room and dining area, but it was not that way in the original plan. It took me a long time to let go of any sort of wall or raised peninsula to separate it from the great room.

I'm glad I spent nearly a year planning my kitchen - the end result is so much better than it would have been.

  • Countertops: Leathered Kodiak Brown granite

Tiny Pittsburgh Kitchen Make-over

Details from pghgolfgirl on 11/12/2012

Introduction:
My house was built in 1911 and the kitchen is about 100 square feet. The only wall that I had an option to knock down has on the opposite side a beautiful built-in china cupboard, original to the house. Since it provides badly needed storage in the dining room, my GC and I decided to work with the original footprint, which was a challenge. I had very little counterspace and cabinets that didn't function (most boxes and bottles were too tall to fit in them). I couldn't wait to get started!

Kitchen Highlights:
  • Cabinets: Pioneer semi-custom (style is raised Madison, in cherry, tawny stain)
  • Countertops: Blume's Keystone Quartz "Dakota Copper" (To say I LOVE this is an understatement.)

Kitchen dimensions: 17 x 19 feet with 12 foot ceilings.

We were having a hard time trying to decide between two islands vs. a massive single island. Boy, am I glad we went this way. The flow is so much better. We LOVE having the second island. It is where we eat most meals. The kids love using it to do homework. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, so the second island serves many functions for us.

The floating shelves are custom and were made during construction by our trim carpenter.

White and Espresso Kitchen With Antique Pendants

Posted by redroze on Sun, Mar 15, 09

Details:
  • Cabinets: custom cabinetry made by our general contractor's uncle whose company is CD 28 Inc. Cabinet style is inset, recessed panel with concealed hinges. Grooved detail on both the doors and frames (slightly more detailed than a Shaker style). The painted cabinetry is Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and the maple cabinets and island were custom stained to match the dark espresso grain in our hardwood floors.
  • Countertops: Bianco Antico granite. The base colour is an off-white with deposits of grey quartz, red garnet that looks like crushed red lollipops, black mica and thin sheets of pearly silver. It is 1 ¼” or 3 cm with an eased edge.
  • Backsplash: Heath Ceramics 2x8 handmade tiles from Ann Sacks in Chalk White with a matte finish. The colour is very white with a grey undertone. We did it in a traditional subway pattern. We went with a white grout as we didn't want the backsplash pattern to compete with the granite. The elongated shape is a modern take on the standard 3x6 subway tile.
  • Appliances:
    ~ Kitchenaid French door fridge
    ~ Kitchenaid 5-burner electric cooktop
    ~ Kitchenaid dishwasher
    ~ GE microwave
    ~ GE wall oven
    ~ Vent-A-Hood range hood insert
  • Hardware: Aubrey polished chrome pulls (mostly 8” but one 6” for the small drawer), Hanson polished chrome 1 ¼” knobs, and two polished nickel 1 ¼” glass knobs for the glass cabinet. All from Restoration Hardware.
  • Pendants: antique reproduction pendant lights from Turn of the Century Lighting in a bright nickel finish
  • Sinks and Faucets:
~ main sink: Blanco silgranit super single precis in Biscuit from Quality Bath.
~ main faucet: with side spray, bar faucet and soap dispensers are all from the Danze Opulence collection in polished chrome from Quality Bath.
~ prep sink: Ticor S705 stainless steel prep sink from Galaxy Tool Supply.
  • Flooring: red oak hardwood. The stain is a custom mix of mainly Duraseal Ebony and some Minwax Red Mahogany (bizarre mix, I know!)
  • Paint: The wall colour is Benjamin Moore Natural Cream which is a pale neutral. The painted cabinets, crown molding, baseboards and ceiling are Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace which is a crisp white with a hint of warmth.
  • Stools: The leather and brushed chrome barstools are from Urban Barn and add a modern touch to the space. I wanted low backs so they don’t interfere with the view from the kitchen to the family room.

More details:
Our goal was to re-do our 17 year old kitchen, original to the house. The old cabinets were standard builder grade and while looking good on the outside, were showing signs of wear (broken drawer guides, etc) internally. Plus the color scheme was, ummm, just a tad outdated – LOL.

We planned 90% of the kitchen ourselves, from doing research ahead of time, looking at magazines, and using the garden web and other internet resources. We met with 3 different cabinet reps / KDs to obtain quotes from three different cabinet lines – Durasupreme, Shiloh, and Kahle’s (a regional brand based a few hours away from us on PA). We obtained a few different ideas from the various KDs we met with and incorporated them into our vision. Our vision was further defined seeing a display of Omega cabinets at the one showroom which also sold the Shiloh line. This display is what we used in helping us design our plan and look.

In looking at cabinetry, we were impressed with the Shiloh brand’s construction but they had no door styles, finishes that would give us the look we really wanted to achieve. Durasupreme was the least inexpensive of the group but also the least flexible (ie they couldn’t do the special microwave cabinet we wanted to do). It was only by a fluke we came across Kahles. Even though they are based in Pennsylvania, we had never heard of them. But one day, when out looking at appliances, one showroom we stopped at had full type kitchen displays. Some of the cabinets we saw were fantastic – better quality than the Omega custom line we saw at the Shiloh dealer – and we thought they had to be full custom cabinetry. We asked one of the appliance sales people about the cabinets and he said a couple local contractors installed all the cabinets at their facility. We showed him the couple cabinets we liked and he told us they were all installed by a man named Dale Conrad. He gave us his number and we contacted him http://www.conradkitchenandbath.com/

We found out the cabinets were made by a company called Kahle’s – which sells regionally in the eastern part of the US. They are a family run operation and do things the old fashioned way as the quality of their cabinets can attest to (for instance note the full plywood TOPS on the base cabinets). They are based in northwest PA pretty much in the middle of nowhere. http://www.kahles.com/ As you can see from the website, marketing is not their strong suit but making top quality cabinets is. They happened to offer styles and finishes that we were looking for and help us complete our vision. Furthermore, we found Dale to be a forthright man to work with. And while his initial quote came in a lot higher than the other two, we worked together, thru some minor design changes, as well as advantageous scheduling to help him fill some down time to come up with a price that was competitive with the others we had received. Dale told us the job would take about 2 weeks (except waiting for the granite to be fabricated) and he was spot on. His crew was here 9 days and completed 95% of the kitchen, hooked up our old sink / faucet as a temporary sink and then we waited about 3 weeks while the granite was being fabricated. Dale’s crew was back the day of the granite installation to disconnect the temporary sink and faucet, install the new ones after the granite went in and finish up some minor details. Two weeks of work exactly with no issues. The only issue we did encounter was with our DIY backsplash. The tile store initially ordered the wrong material so that delayed me installing it for about 10 days until they had the correct material shipped. Since we didn’t order the tile until the granite was in, this pushed the final completion back slightly.
