Forkfriend's finally finished kitchen

Posted by Forkfriend (My Page) on Mon, Mar 29, 04 at 11:40
Without all your guidance and good humor I don't think we would ever would have gotten this kitchen finished--I wish I could personally cook dinner for everyone who helped get us through the 10,000 decisions that are buried in every renovated kitchen:
Here it is at last:
Cabinets are Bertch Legacy in eggshell
Sink is the Rohl Allia in fireclay, in their bisque color
Faucet from Baths from the Past
Grapevine carved columns from enkeboll, corbels from Van Dykes
Granite is Kashmir Gold with an ogee edge
Bluestar range, FP dishdrawers, Jennair fridge
DH handpainted the breakfast room table
thanks again to all who led the way....

That is a gorgeous kitchen! You did a magnificent job and I'd be happy to have that kitchen in a milisecond!
It's elegant and functional with great design elements and lots of detail. You must be thrilled with how it turned out! How much "help" did you have? I have Bertch cabs too, I thought I recognized some of your fillers etc. I love my Allia sink, I'm sure you will too!

What a gorgeous kitchen, you should be very proud. My DH and I both love the granite and are now tempted to take a look at the Kashmir Gold (we've been thinking laminate all along). Congratulations!

o RE: Forkfriend's finally finished kitchen

Gorgeous job, everything works so well together! I have to tell you -- and this is a compliment -- that it looks like a brand new home.
Also glad to see the Allia in action. Mine should be installed by the end of the week.

Yahoo has been having a lot of problems the last few days so that is probably what's going on. I am anxious to see the photos too since I also have cream glazed cabinets and Kashmir Gold.

Your kitchen is absolutely breathtaking! I really love it. So serene and elegant. It reminds me of a book from Victoria Magazine from the 90's - At Home with White. A truly wonderful book. You would probably enjoy it. I love the sink area, and your solution for towels. Those rings are a great idea, and look perfect. What did you use for your backsplash? It reminds me of Walker Zanger's Grammercy Park line. So pretty! The dining area is fabulous as well!

Yeeouzzzza! Wonderful job. I love the monocramatic(sp?) look. Very elegant. Was it difficult to get all the colors of white to blend together? Yours looks so put together and flows very well. It looks like you spent alot of time planning the function of your new kitchen. Great Job!!!

Thanks everyone! You forum veterans can see all kinds of decisions influenced by these boards--from soap dispensers and dishdrawers to hoods and the use of glass. Ours is an old house, with a typically cramped kitchen, so we took down the walls between kitchen, pantry, butler's pantry, maids room and laundry room to create this space. We kept lots of windows, despite the loss in wall cabinet space, because we wanted a really light, airy look.
The pictures make it hard to see the colors, but the walls are actually a very, very transparent blue that looks like air, as are the backsplash tiles (which are from Grazie, a line from Italy that looks hand made but is much more affordable than the Walker Zanger ones we also looked at.)
You are right about the planning--I can't say strongly enough that the best decision we made was to give ourselves a full year (well...we were also waiting for summer and contractors....) to plan, so that we made our mistakes on paper, played with all the options.
But even when we messed up--like ordering a full depth oven cabinet that closed in that back corner way to much--we were rescued by an incredible contractor. He and his team knew exactly how much flexibility and craftsmanship are required in an old house--and they rebuilt that cabinet into the base unit/microwave cabinet that you see in the pictures.
FYI, behind the pocket doors is a walkin pantry and laundry room, with the Duets stacked. This was a great solution to avoiding the basement stairs with the laundry baskets, and having open, handy storage space for all the excess Costco bulk....
thanks again for all the support!

What a beautiful, elegant, yet comfortable, kitchen! I love the windows (and towel hooks), and the glass cabinets that wrap around the corner...and the tile backsplash...and, and, and, so much more. It looks like a great space that coordinates nicely with the DR, too. I hope you love being there!

The floor is white oak, with a natural finish, because that's what was already in the rest of the house. The new oak looks a little different than the old boards everywhere else, but it's not too noticeable, and we wanted the warmth and softness for the kitchen. The long runner in front of the sink, dishwasher and pullout garbage seems to catch 90% of the drips and splashes, so we've had no problem having wood in the kitchen so far....
