Introduction:
We built a new home in 2012.  Our kitchen was finished in June 2012.  The overall style of our home is "Southern" even though we live in the Midwest.  We just love Southern homes.

Kitchen Highlights:
  • Cabinets - Crystal Cabinets "Keyline," inset, antique white paint. Cabinets are set to 96'H, roll trays, large drawer base, FHD base, pull out trash, wood hood, top and bottom moldings
  • Backsplash - Rittenhouse subway tile in biscuit
  • Granite - Typhoon Bordeaux with 30 year sealer
  • Wall Color - Universal Khaki (Sherwin Williams color but I had it mixed Benjamin Moore).
  • Crown and floor moldings custom matched to the cabinets.
  • Floor - 4 inch Northern White Oak. Hand laid/sanded/stained in house by a local company. Stained "medium."
  • Pulls and Knobs - Amerock Kane and Allison Value in Satin Nickel
  • Faucet - Delta Victorian Single Handle pull down - stainless

It is where we eat most meals. The kids love using it to do homework. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, so the second island serves many functions for us.

I am in a suburb of New York City - and the prices reflect that.
We sold our old kitchen on Craig’s List for $1,500.

Background:
The space is different than the original kitchen. Behind the original was a small powder room and tiny laundry room. Each had a window in it. First we did a small addition on the other side of the house for a powder room and big laundry room, then we knocked down the wall and opened up the space. We actually had to move both windows several inches - annoying but well worth it to achieve the symmetry needed.

My GC built the hood. He carved it with wood, covered it with masonite, then sheetrock. Then it was painted, plastered & glazed. The mouldings were all ordered with the cabinetry so it matched. Obviously the guts of the vent cost $, but the hood itself cost me a days labor plus materials, paint, etc.

  • Floors: radiant heated limestone from Marble Trend; it’s Jasman.
  • Paint: Wall colour in kitchen is Plaster by Homestead House; stairwell to basement and up to second floor is Benjamin Moore Buckhorn
  • Art: We have some great pieces, including my beautiful roosters from local contemporary folk artist Pey Lu, and a couple of pieces from my best friend and amateur artist, Vera.
Background Info:
Here’s what we did:
  • Knock it down and build it out. Our house is almost 100 years old and as such, the original kitchen was quite small – about 9x10. We have an unusually shaped lot, and the shape allowed for us to be able to knock down an exterior wall and build out.
  • Make it look unique and up to date but fitting with the rest of the house. The objective was to make the kitchen look like it was always there, with more up to date appliances. To achieve that, we had the cabinets hand-painted and distressed and chose heritage colours. We used reclaimed oak planks for the island countertop; the hardware is a combination of hand-forged cast iron from England and finds from architectural salvage. Countertops and the main sink are soapstone.
  • Find room for the "library"! An imperative was to find a home for my 300+ (and counting) cookbook collection. We achieved that through clever cabinetry and the acquisition of a beautiful old hutch.

Warm Contemporary Kitchen with IKEA Cabinets

Posted by morton5 on Wed, May 27, 09

Details:
  • Cabinets: Ikea Tidaholm oak in black/brown, and Adel birch in medium brown (in pantry area and planning peninsula). Shaker doors. I chose IKEA because I love their organization systems and their Blum tandembox drawers and glides. I assembled all of the cabinets myself and changed the edgebanding to match the door/drawer fronts. I was kind of excited to find "Made in Italy" stickers on all the Tidaholm doors. My GC's carpenter installed the cabinets. All drawers are full extension with soft close.
  • Countertop: Madura Gold granite
  • Backsplash: Jeffrey Court's Fire and Ice, enhanced, kashmir grout
  • Cabinet Hardware: Hickory Hardware pulls
  • Range: Bluestar 36" RNB 6-burner with island trim. The cabinet run on the range wall is pulled out 3 inches. I have a 4" strip of granite behind the range.
  • Hood: Futuro Futuro 48" plane (980 cfm) venting through a 6" pipe. Installed 28 3/4in above the range.
  • Ovens: GE Monogram Advantium over ZET
  • Dishwasher: Bosch Integra 800 series
  • Refrigerator: Samsung French door RFG297. We pulled out surrounding cabs to make the fridge look built-in.
  • "Kid fridge" 24" LG LRBP1031 in Titanium-- love it! Holds the kids' yogurts, drinks, fruit, ice cream, frozen baked goods, ice packs-- and keeps the kids out of my way. In the same footprint as refrigerator drawers, I got twice the space at half the price. Between the Samsung and the LG, I have almost 40 cu. ft. of refrigerator/freezer space.
  • Prep Sink Disposal: compact Badger disposal, the smallest I could find (we are on septic, so it is just used for the odds and ends I don't scoop out of the sink)."
  • Faucets: Grohe K4 (prep sink) and Alira (main sink)
  • Tapmaster at main sink
  • Soap dispensers from Never MT web site
  • Sinks: Zero radius, 15 gauge stainless from Ebay-- 30" at main sink and 23" at prep sink
  • Table: Oak from reclaimed antique floor joists, from Ebay (barnseeker.com)
  • Chairs: Bonded leather from Overstock-- love them
  • Floors: Red oak, Refinished and stained Minwax golden oak, 3 coats of oil-based poly
  • Lighting: Grundtal lights under the cabinets. I used 3 on an 80" section of horizontal cabs.
I kept my old kitchen light fixture and ceiling fixture. I'm still planning on adding a couple of puck lights to the shelf behind the hood-- I have outlets at the tops of the high cabs, with a switch next to the range.

1930 Spanish Kitchen

Details:
  • Cabinets - locally made face-frame of birch with inset panel & bead detail on doors, melamine interiors, Blumotion hinges and all the internal bells & whistles.
  • Countertops - unoiled Brazilian Black soapstone with radiused corners and eased edge, 3 cm thickness, from Soapstone West in Escondido CA. Runnels by the sink. Mahogany top on the beadboard hutch.
  • Backsplash - custom 2.5 x 5" Chardonnay color handmade glazed subway tile by Ken Mason Tile, Long Beach CA.
  • Tile Mural - from Tierra y Fuego in San Diego CA. It is a "cuerda seca" ("dry cord") style of Talavera from Guanajuato, Mexico. The design is a Persian rug. We left off the fringes. We found the black quarter-rounds and 3 x 3s at a local tile store at the last minute
  • Range - CornuFe in basic black.
  • Frig - Liebherr 60" built-in. (Two 30" wide refrigerators above, two freezers below. Opens up like French doors but it's 4 separate compressors)
  • DW - Miele Optima with panel front.
  • Sinks - Rohl Shaws Original 30" apron and 15" undermount prep with ISE Evolution disposers.
  • Faucets - Kohler Vinnata (K-690, K-691)in brushed nickel.
  • Cab hardware - "Duluth" 6" pulls and 1.25" knobs in brushed nickel from Restoration Hardware.
  • Appliance pulls - Top Knobs 12" pulls in BN. The DW has one mounted horizontally--also serves as towel rack!
  • Floors - Original 1930 tongue-in-groove fir, sanded, repaired and refinished after removing 2 layers of linoleum.
  • Windows - Custom arched 3-lite pull casement, based on a ~1930 design I saw in the neighborhood.
  • Lighting - Schoolhouse Electric, all fluorescent GU24 except the pendants (too small for GU24 bulbs). Different ceiling mounts in kitchen, pantry and laundry.
Pendents: Northwestern 6" fitter size bases in antique black with custard shades.
  • Hood - Best PIK 45 with custom arched drywall enclosure and remote switch.
  • Paint - all Benjamin Moore:
~ Wall base color: Ivory White (925) "Aura" water-base
~ Wall green accent color: Mountain Lane (488) "Aura" water-base
~ Cabinets and trim: Lemon Chiffon (932) oil-base
  • French door - ordered through B&B Hardware in Long Beach, CA
  • Our CKD is Dana Jones, "The Kitchen Consultant," in Long Beach, CA.
  • Our GC is Bob Kaplan of Long Beach, CA.
The kitchen is 18.5' x 9.75'. Ceilings are 8'2" high. The pantry is another 7' long and the laundry another 8', with an exterior door. There is a hallway coming off the pantry that leads to a bath and bedroom. The room adjacent to the beadboard hutch is our breakfast room. The formal dining room adjoins the arch in the foreground of the first photo. Total project involved gutting 350 sf to the studs, reframing, rewiring and replumbing.

There is an HD TV with recessed bracket and concealed mini-amplifier feeding a stereo speaker in the ceiling. A stereo speaker with one woofer and two tweeters. Our contractor was able to create a space within the wall where the swing-arm bracket can reside--thus the TV is almost flush with the wall when retracted. We found that professional A/V guys are all over this stuff.

The windows are brand new, based on a period design that I saw on another home a few blocks away. The center lite is fixed and the side lites open in--that is termed a "pull casement" window.

Decora Arlington cherry - Tropical Green granite kitchen

Details:
  • Cabinets: Decora, Cherry, Arlington stain. Blumotion, full extension are standard features with this cabinet line.
  • Countertop: Hawaiian Green granite aka Tropical Green/ Kerala Green/ Verde Laura.
  • Backsplash: also Hawaiian Green granite
  • Appliances (all GE Monogram - DH works for GE and we got a VERY good discount)
    - dishwasher: GE Monogram
    - refrigerator: 42" GE Monogram
    - range: 6 burner GE Monogram with griddle option
    - hood: GE Monogram
    - microwave: GE Monogram Advantium model 120
  • Sink: Galaxy Tools Ticor S405-DR
  • Faucet: Brizo Floriano in stainless steel finish (e-bay seller 5borough). The airswitch (also stainless steel) came from GalesburgElectric.com. The disposal is GE 1HP continuous feed.
  • Lighting: My installer supplied the light cans. The pendants are made by Access Lighting, bought as a close-out from lamps-lighting on ebay. The UL (LED pucks, self-adhesive) came from BJ’s - $30 for 6. I pretty much never use the UL, so I am glad I didn’t spend a fortune on the wired UL.
  • Paint: BM Tyler Taupe.
  • Pulls: purchased on ebay from Contempo Living (a great seller!)
  • Floor: we kept the 'old' floor, as it was replaced just before we bought the house by the previous owner. It is just fine (ceramic 12x12 tile) and it covers a good chunk of the first floor so it would be very wasteful and a pain too to replace it.
  • The crock was made by a local artist, Darren Prodger from Saratoga Clayworks.
  • Nifty idea: hiding the phone and cell phone charger inside a wall cabinet. The outlet was put through the cabinet side adjacent to the wall, so the regular phone is hidden, and so are the wires for charging mobiles.
The floor plan remained the same to what the previous kitchen was - what I mean by that is that no walls were removed. The previous owner had a eat-in kitchen but with the formal dining room next door, I would've much more preferred more cabinets (especially since there was no pantry closet) and counter space. So the new kitchen now has all 4 walls plus a peninsula. Basically it is 2 L shaped bits. The sink/range walls are 11X9 (old kitchen), and the fridge/12' side walls are 9X8. The peninsula is 5X2.

Details:
  • Cabinets: Mouser cabinetry in cream painted finish
  • Countertops:
Minas Soapstone - still not oiled... I'm loving it! (When it gets dark spots on it from oils I just take a sponge with Dawn dish detergent and wipe it back to original blue.)
Carrara Marble Counter on Knotty Alder Island
  • Backsplash: Krazy Krackle Cream subway tile backsplash. (Krazy Krackle is just the name from Sonoma Tile)
  • Sharp Microwave Drawer in island
  • AGA 6-4 Range (affectionately called Nigel now)
  • KitchenAid Fridge
  • Thermador wall oven
  • Oiled Bronze hardware from Colonial
  • Pendants: from Architects and Heroes - amber shades - from a store in Cape May NJ called 'Across the Way'. http://www.madamesport.com/ATW/index.html
  • Flooring: My floors were 'rescreened' but that was it. Those are original to the house so I don't know much about them as I'm not the first owner. Most likely pine.
  • Paint: from Finnaren & Haley Paint. 13 Independence Hall Quill and the trim (not pictured) is Galahad white.
  • The flip down over the computer is actually 4 'mailbox' compartments to hold bills, to do items, coupons, etc.
The ceilings are 9 feet, and the pendant lights are adjustable.
