  • Cabinets: Ikea Tidaholm, shaker oak (installed by a certified Ikea installer)
  • Granite: Golden Oak
  • Backsplash: Corian routed to look like tile. It looks much better in person than in the pictures (it looks like unfinished drywall in the pictures). It is nice, but I wish it had a bit more pop!
  • Faucet: Delta Victorian.
  • Sink: Pegasus
  • Hot water dispenser: ISE, love it.
  • Appliances: We kept all of our Frigidaire Gallery appliances (the microwave is new, the old one died during the remodel!). I'm going to replace the dishwasher soon.
  • Flooring: Mirage brand natural oak. Couldn't talk DH into the walnut!

  • Cabinets: Knotty Alder
  • Countertops: The countertops in the working kitchen are Green Galaxy granite, and the ones in the dining area are Forest Web Brown marble.
  • Sink: purchased on ebay from Amanda Jane's Attic. I picked the design I wanted and we worked out the size and they made it for me. It is made in China - not Mexican copper. The original sink we purchased was hammered copper from Mexico - and we were very much unsatisfied with it when it arrived, so we returned it. Then thank goodness I found Amanda Janes! I recommend them very highly for their service and quality product.

  • Copper Faucet: The faucet is a Danze faucet. It is not a living finish. It has some sort of sealer on it to keep it from tarnishing.
  • Pulls: from ebay

Details:
  • Cabinets: custom cabinets in maple from Honey Brook Cabinets in Pennsylvania
  • Countertop: Juparana Bordeaux granite
  • backsplash: tbd
  • interim backsplash: medallion from Home Goods
  • Fisher Paykel dish drawers
  • Silgranit Anthracite single bowl sink
  • Kohler Vinnata

Things I love:
  • Silgranit Anthracite single bowl sink (went from a two bowl sink to this one and just love it!!)
  • Granite - chose Juparana Bordeaux and just love the colors and the movement - it is so warm and beautiful!
  • We took out island (it was more of a hinderence in our kitchen) and put in a peninsula - great countertop space and makes the flow much better.
  • Took out a former wall of 12" wide floor to ceiling pantry cabinets and put in a beautiful pantry 'hutch' type cabinet system with cabinets on sides (above counter level) and open in middle (for display items and microwave) and pull out shelves and drawers on bottom half of pantry 'hutch'. This is one of my favorite parts of the kitchen.
  • Changed microwave from being over stove to hidden behind pull out doors on the pantry 'hutch' - love that it can be hidden!
  • Deep drawers for pots and pans
  • Love the hardwood floor - again, so warm and cozy.
  • Love my Fisher Paykel dish drawers - we took a chance on this one and am so happy we did.
  • Love my Kohler Vinnata pull down faucet - it is beautiful and so functional!
  • Went from white Thermofoil cabinets to painted maple cabinets (white with glaze) and love the real wood!

pharaoh's Kitchen

Almost finished Kitchen remodel - DIY

Contact: pharaoh (My Page)

Link to kitchen photos: http://kitchenforum.snapfish.com

Details:
  • Cabinets: built from Red birch. Frameless cabs. All lower cabs are drawers. Drawer hardware is blumotion . Hinges are self close/soft close. Finish is oil based poly. No stain. Door style is shaker with a reverse reveal ( the front of the panel is flat, the back is raised).
  • Floor: travertine with onyx insets (laid on schluter ditra isolation membrane). The marble medallion was factory made.
  • Lighting is 4" recessed halogens on dimmers.
  • Asko Dishwasher
  • Jade 48" built in refrigerator
  • Electrolux double wall ovens and warming drawer
  • Bluestar 30" range top
  • The most expensive and bold part of the kitchen is the Connemara Irish Green Marble counters with floor returns. All of the templating, fabrication and installation was supervised by me. The installer did a flawless job.
  • The sink is counter depth apron front Julienesque stainless, flush mounted to the countertop.
  • The faucet is Hamat Ergo
  • The china cabinet has no glass! It has a built in aquarium
  • The hood is glass/stainless from ebay
  • The island has a back lit onyx panel that we made and installed for a lounge look when we have cocktail parties :)
  • onyx pendants from Home Depot
  • cabinet pulls from ebay
  • rope lighting
  • backsplash: tbd.... thinking of solid glass panels.
  • The storage containers are the 365 series from IKEA. The spice jars are also from IKEA.

We did all the work ourselves including building the cabinets, installing the floors, cabs, appliances, electrical, gas, plumbing, lighting, etc. The only thing we made was the marble counters.

Some more details on the woodworking.

We have spent the last two years learning woodworking and acquiring all the power tools and skills needed to take on such a huge project. It took us longer than expected due to many difficult techniques. The finishing alone took me a month! We had set up the garage for 5 months as a workshop.

1. The cabinet boxes are all made from prefinished 3/4" birch plywood using biscuit joints and pocket holes. The front edges of the plywood is finished with a burgess edge solid red birch insert. (no veneer or tape). The doors are shaker style with a flat front panel and a raised panel on the inside.

2. All the drawers are dovetailed (even though it is an overkill in todays day of pocket screws and glue) but I wanted to learn how to do them well.

3. The grain matching was a difficult task because you have to mark each piece and keep the order correct through the entire process.

4. Highly figured boards were reserved for places like the door above the aquarium etc.

  • Backsplash: Sonoma Tantrum
  • Floor: Casa Dolce Casa Porcelain
  • Dishwashers: Bosch
  • Refrigerator: Kitchen Aid cabinet depth
  • Oven: Jenn-air (the only thing we used from the previous kitchen)
  • Main Faucet: Kohler forte
  • Prep sink faucet: Bach Minuet
  • Cooktop: Thermador
  • Pulls: Amerock
  • The table and chairs and stools are all nichols and stone
My camera really washed out the colors. The backsplash tiles are a gold color and a green, both of which do a good job of drawing those colors out of the granite. Also, the color on the walls, which came out white in these shots, is actually a cream.

Additional info:
05/05/2010
After living with my new kitchen for two years I wanted you to add these thoughts to it:
I wanted to add why I did some of the things I did, which is different than many people on the forum have done. First, I have a 9X12 U shaped kitchen in an open floor plan. I did not want the wall taken down and an island made between the family room and the kitchen because I would lose too much cabinet space up top and my house is already almost totally open. If I made the hanging cabinets, I would have this weird hole between the counter and cabinets, but another reason we didn't take the wall out was because it is a load bearing wall and would have required $$$$$ to reconfigure the house! Also, looking at piled up dishes wasn't attractive to me.
The end of the kitchen had always been closed off because there was a little double oven right on the end. I chose to get a full sized oven down below and totally open up the end making it a curve so as to draw people into the kitchen and I could converse and see out, too. I love the curved granite and cabinets. It also almost doubled my counter space to the right of the stove. I lost the double oven, but made up for it with a convection microwave. I chose, and this is where I seem to be alone, to actually have the microwave ON the counter *gasp* LOL. I did it because with a U shaped kitchen you end up with these huge spacious, practically unusable corners that are very deep. There was lots of room to place it and it is very convenient and easy to reach. I have the microwave in one of the corners and fruits and onions in the other corner.
I varied the height of the cabinets so that we didn't feel like we were boxed in by cabinets.
The other thing I did that was different was to not get the spinning corners. I needed all the storage space I could get and the spinning lazy susan corners lost too much room. I am very happy I did that. It is not at all hard to reach items in there because the corner doors open fully and flat. It also gave very large shelf space for very large pans that don't fit easily other places. Those huge upper corner cabinets had glass put on them so they didn't look so enormous. I have loads of space in those.
I also totally ignored all the advice on the forum and chose to:
Have a double sink rather than one giant sink. I love having a deep sink on the left to hide dirty dishes, but a clean shallower sink on the right to use.
I do not have any of those deep drawers that everyone seems to like. I chose to get a traditional pot cabinet under the electric range, but added pull out drawers so I could get to them easily.
Since I have a smaller kitchen, I still wanted a full sized pantry. We moved the garage door over four feet to make room for it. I got a full depth pantry, but added pull out drawers so I could reach everything in the back.
Instead of another set of drawers to the right of the stove, I chose to do one vertical cabinet to place all the baking pans in. It fits all my large flat stuff and it is very easy to access.
I got a very simple bullnose edge to the granite for my simple kitchen.
In a small kitchen, I worried that a busy tile backsplash would be distracting. We just did a simple granite backsplash, but made it taller that usual. That way it met the coolio niche shelf we had made and the niche became a focal point because it is surrounded by white paint instead of a tile. It also served an easy to clean area for stove splashes and I don't have to worry about cleaning splashes off of paint.
The other thing that was very important in my narrower kitchen was a counter depth refrigerator with french doors. Having the narrower doors means when someone is using the refrigerator it is not blocking floor space, so another person can walk by without any trouble. I did get a large counter depth one (24 cf), so I can actually get a turkey in the freezer if I need to.
The garden window added light, which I have been really happy to have and I now have orchids that love that area and have bloomed two years running in there.
I went with xenon undercabinet lighting, which I have used daily for over 2 years now and have yet to have to change a bulb! Wow.
I regret none of our decisions. Going with dark green granite seemed a risk (what, green?), but I love the neutral green color with the light maple cabinets.
I thought you could add my thought to my kitchen somehow since having a U kitchen is a little different than people with large open kitchens and it has different considerations because of that.

Features:
Ceiling Fan
Counter-depth Frig
Garden Window
Glass Doors
Lighting: Under Cabinet
Pullout Pantry
Soap Dispenser
Trash Pullout

  • Cabinets - Plato custom inset in Diamond White
  • Counters - Honed AB granite (love it!)
  • Backsplash - Walker Zanger Tribeca Series, 2 by 4 inch subway tiles in Carrera marble
  • Sink - Shaw's Original 30"
  • Faucets - Expo's Pegasus brand
  • Refrig. - Sub Zero 700 series fully integrated (to look like an armoire)
  • Cab. hardware - Restoration Hardware
  • Sconces - Restoration Hardware
  • Pendants - Seagull Lighting
  • Paint - Dunn-Edwards "Flaxen"
  • Floors - mahogany from a company called Provenza - color Gold Dust.
Our remodel included a 180 foot addition to expand the kitchen, new hardwood floors throughout the downstairs, extensive molding work and many, many bumps along the way.

The counters are Honed Absolute Black Zimbabwe. I originally wanted soapstone but was discouraged by how easily it scratches and dings. The honed granite gives a comparable look to soapstone and has a very soft natural feel to it.

For the sink we have columns that are pulled forward about an inch from the cabinets and the sink is pulled forward about 2.5 inches from that. The granite was cut out to follow the lines. We have a positive reveal on about 1/2 inch on the sink. The granite has a 1" overhang all around the cabinets and just follows the lines of our columns that are pulled forward.

The kitchen is roughly 20 by 20. I also have a wall with built in fridge/freezer and a desk area. In the other corner I did not show our table area in front of the french door. The island is 8 feet by 4.5 feet and the aisle between the range and island is about 3.5 feet. I have read that 4 feet is ideal but you don't want any narrower than 3.5 feet. We have doors, drawers and a wine fridge on the island that all open without problems. Also the oven doors open with enough room for someone to still pass by. The aisles on the sides of the island are wider, a litte over 4 feet but it all feels very comfortable space wise.

Comments:
This kitchen remodel was a total DIY job, except for the granite countertops, that took almost 7 months to complete. There were a lot hassles and problems, but we made it to the finish line. I want to publicly praise my DH for all his hard work and the long hours he put into making it a reality.
So far I love the island the best. I never had one before. We got reduced size cabinets (18"W) so I could have an island. The island measurements are 21"W x 75.5"L. I know that sounds small on paper, but it is a great workspace. I use it constantly. I store all my appliances underneath and it will be my prep area. I do love the red garnet in the VB granite too. When the sun from the skylights fall on the island it sparkles. I love it!

I was the GC and did the design myself with some input from KD.

I did not want a dishwasher. I think now if I had to do it again, I might consider one. The only reason I would want one is because it would be easier to keep my granite from getting wet. LOL My drawers could be replaced with an 18" dishwasher, but I doubt I'd ever do it. If I had a family I would definitely have one.

  • Cabinets: Birch cabinets, custom made by a friend. We finished them ourselves. The shelves are pretty much rectangle boxes attached to the wall with a cleat. The cleat was attached to the wall in the studs and then the shelf was slid over it and screwed into the cleat.
  • Countertops: Santa Rita soapstone from Rock Tops
  • Backsplash: white crackle subway tile
  • Refrigerator with chalkboard panel
  • Microwave is at the end of the penninsula.
  • Paint: Benjamin Moore "Quiet Moments"

Almost completely DIY.

It took a giant leap of faith on our part to use a wall of open shelving. It doesn't feel as empty as it looks when you are standing inside it. I think it would have been a big mistake on our part to eliminate so many uppers without adding that whole wall of pantry cabinets. We have so much storage space on the base cabinets that I don't miss the uppers at all. I do miss an island but I was afraid to put one in because I didn't feel there would have been enough space for my children to congregate around it without getting in my way and ticking me off. lol I will have stools at the penninsula when I find the right ones.

The main problem with our old kitchen's design was there wasn't a good place for food storage. That is how the pantries came into play. The first one is a complete pullout. The second one is a door with pullout shelves in them and the third is a broom closet.

  • Backsplash: went to a local metal fabricator, and got the sheet for $60 (18 gauge 30" by 36"). We attached it with screws in the bottom corners (metal fabricators put them there for me), liquid nail, and then it is also lipped underneath the hood. I think that the liquid nail was all that was really needed. It's some strong stuff. I don't plan on adding anymore backsplash.

DH built in a closet which we covered with door units from cabinet people to give a uniform look, lots of storage; DH also built the hood top since we did not like the looks of the standard one from Quality; we ordered finished plywood and beadboard and trim pieces and he improvised; note the lowered microwave shelf for safety; all the copper and brass displayed in the kitchen are from travels in Turkey; bookcases on island we're enjoying having cookbooks at hand.

The pantry wall is something we've carried with us from past two builds and I would not give it up for anything since it holds tons. Using only the doors & doorframes saved a lot over pantry/utility cabinets and still gave the look of the cabinetry.
